Elena couldn’t help but grin at Alicia’s attempt at an American accent. She definitely wasn’t quite there yet, although she thought she’d probably be able to get better with a little practice. Still, Elena couldn’t really talk. Her own British accent was just as bad.
“I know Katherine can do the English accent,” Elena commented, raising her eyebrows a little. “She lived there for a while.” In the 1500s, she didn’t say. “But me? Not so much.” She had tried the accent a couple of times when she and Damon had been on their tour of England a couple of months ago, and she pretty much had the phrase ‘I’d like some milk with my tea’ down but, apart from that, she was miserable at accents. Damon had laughed at her... and she wasn’t going to think about Damon right now.
“Katherine’s my doppelganger,” Elena added after a moment, realising that point probably hadn’t been explained yet. “She’s from the same world as me. We’re part of an ancient bloodline which, every so often, throws up another one of us.” Elena paused, rolling her eyes. “You’re lucky you’re not part of that.”
Elena glanced around the lobby. There weren’t many people coming and going –she guessed since only the displaced lived here. Still, she didn’t know anyone who lived in this block, despite having been here for over half a year. She’d stuck mainly to her group of friends from home since arriving, with the exceptions of Jemma, Grant, Felix and Ariel. College and Damon – she wasn’t going to think about Damon - had taken up any other free time she might have had. She wondered whether she should have made more of an effort to make friends but, at home, strangers weren’t usually good news. She guessed that had become kind of ingrained in her.
"Do you want me to carry this up to your apartment?" Elena asked, jiggling the bag hooked over her shoulder. It was heavy but it was easy enough for her to manage with her vampire strength. "I thought we could sort through and see if there's anything in particular you want to buy tomorrow?"
