Elena's laugh only became more pronounced at Damon's quip at Edward Cullen. "If you say so," she teased, as he lifted her head so she was face to face with him.
His blue eyes were intense and seemed to burn through her with icy fire, making her feel vulnerable and exposed. She wasn't sure how she felt about being married, if she was honest. She loved Damon and fully intended on being with him for... well, forever, but marriage hadn't even been on her radar. It had freaked her out when Matt had talked about getting married and settling down, but that had been four years ago. She wasn't the same girl she was then. And she hadn't loved Matt the way she loved Damon. Her love for Damon was all-consuming and she didn't have any doubts that it would last forever. Wasn't that the sort of love you had for the person you married?
Perhaps it was the rashness of it all that scared her? Elena was, by nature, quite a cautious person. It was true that Damon brought out her adventurous side, but this was something else! People were going to judge her for this. Everyone would have an opinion. Jenna! Elena mentally cringed at the thought of what Jenna would say. And Ric! Oh god. They were going to be in so much trouble when they got home.
But that was almost exciting, at the same time. They'd done something wild and irrational and irresponsible just for the sake of love, be damned what everyone else thought. That was exactly the sort of relationship she had with Damon. What better represented 'them'?
"I don't know," Elena admitted. "I feel like I need to do something - laugh, cry, scream, something." She pressed her teeth into her lower lips, looking up at him with wide, brown eyes.
"I don't know how you're so calm," she stated after a moment, pulling back a little to look at him. "I feel like I'm going to bounce off the walls if I don't make myself sit still, but you're just... fine." She gave a little huff of laughter. "How am I the one freaking out about this?"
