Elena's arms had slowly moved to wrap around herself, almost as though she were protecting herself from what she feared Damon might say. However, as he spoke, she started to relax. He was the insecure one. He felt vulnerable and she could understand why. Relationships hadn't worked out great for him over the years. He was scared that anything good in his life was just transitory so, instead of waiting for it to end, he ruined it instead. At least that way he could put it down to his bad boy nature and carry on with being angry at the world. But this wasn't transitory. She wasn't going anywhere and she knew that was hard for him to process.
"It's okay to be scared, Damon," Elena said, her voice a lot calmer than it had been a few moments ago, although still high in pitch and thick from the tears that had barely begun to dry up. "This is scary because it's real."
When Damon stepped forward, Elena closed the small gap between then, reaching up to cup his face in her hands, her whole body screaming at her to just throw her arms around him and cling to him for the rest of time. "We are lucky, Damon. You and me. All I want is to be with you. How many people get a second chance at that? At home, we wasted so much time. I don't want to do that again." She shook her head, peering up into his clear, blue eyes. "So, please, will you just let yourself be happy, for once? For me?"
