Who: Caroline Forbes What: the First are jerks, also always look both ways before crossing the street When: today! Where: Sunnydale Warnings: character death
After Carol Lockwood vanished Caroline had figured that maybe the Seal had decided to be nice or that the First or whatever was making Mrs. Lockwood appear to her had vanished or something. All that had mattered was that she didn’t have to hear the constant barrage of how she was a horrible person for who she loved, that she didn’t have to hear the detailed account of how Carol had died from the woman’s mouth, didn’t have to hear how she was a traitor and should simply end it all because what was the point in living after who she’d chosen to live out eternity with?
What would your mother think?
That had always been the closer, the part that had Caroline’s heart racing too fast, breathing too hard and panic wanting to take over. She hated being human, despised the lack of control over every aspect of her life at the moment and she’d realized they had been gone for a week. Which either meant they had one more week or possibly everything was permanent and she really didn’t know how she’d handle being human and ripped away from Lawrence permanently.
Killing herself probably would have been the easier solution but she wouldn’t do that, not with the hope still lingering that there was a chance to return home and everything that was happening would fade away to be nothing but a horrible dream they had all escaped from. It had been easy enough to focus on Olivia at first. Finding ways to get animal blood for the woman who hated vampires and had become one. The Seal sure liked to screw with people in the worst ways. Focusing on others only worked for so long and was pushed away all together when Carol had appeared.
But Carol was gone and Caroline was trying to breathe again, to find some comfort in the few moments of silence that filled her world. She needed to locate where the others were again, having wandered off to try and distance herself from Carol and also not wanting the rest of them to hear everything the woman had been saying. Now she wasn’t sure exactly where she had headed and considering she wasn’t near any of the usual Sunnydale landmarks Caroline was at a loss for which way to even go. Messaging everyone was probably the only way she’d find the others again. Unless she accidentally stumbled across them.
“If it isn’t Niklaus’ whore,” a voice started from behind her and Caroline froze, knowing only a handful of people who called Klaus by that name. None of his siblings spoke it with that much venom, not even when they were pissed off at him, plus she knew all of their voices.
She might never have met Mikael but turning to face the man she could see the bits and pieces of his children in him, from the eyes to the lips to the dark gaze he directed at her. He was still speaking, saying things she didn’t particularly want to hear, calling Klaus things that had her bristiling, wanting to wipe the smug look off of his face and make him eat every harsh thing he said. But she also had heard the stories of how ruthless he was, how he’d drank vampire blood and considering he’d made it his life’s mission to cause Klaus pain she really didn’t want to give him an opportunity to strike at her.
Caroline didn’t know if the First could make whoever it manifested actually harm anyone outside of breaking down their minds with all that was said but there was no way in hell she was going to stick around and find out. Not with him. Not when she was human and entirely too helpless.
She took off, sprinting down the street and as far away from his laughter as she could get, glancing back every so often to see him following her. She was so used to flashing when she ran, to being invincible that she never thought to look as she darted out across the street.
By the time she heard the screeching of the breaks it was too late, the truck colliding with her body and sending her flying across the road. Every inch of her hurt and she couldn’t breathe, lungs collapsing as blood filled them up, rib piercing her heart. People were screaming, someone was at her side saying something but she couldn't make it out. Her ears were ringing, gaze hazy before it was too much to even see let alone concentrate on what was happening around her.
She thought of her mom.
She thought of Klaus.
And then all there was to do was feel pain before everything ceased to exist.
