Stiles had been...in full on avoid mode since Scott had returned. It probably made him a terrible friend, but he didn't even want to look at himself in the mirror. Why would Scott? He knew Scott didn't blame him, really. Of course he didn't. He was Scott. But Allison was dead back home, because of him. And he didn't know how to cope with that. He didn't know how he was supposed to look at any of them.

He hadn't even lived through it yet. If the guilt was this bad now, how much worse was it going to be after he actually did? If any of them got sent home again, the damage there was completely irrevocable. It was enough now that he was seriously contemplating going to see Crowley. He wasn't sure if a deal in this world would even work back home. And the guy had refused the last deal he'd tried to make -- ironically, the same deal he wanted to make this time. His life for Allison's.

Ultimately he knew that her life was a lot more valuable than his own. Maybe Crowley wouldn't take the deal because he'd sensed that the deal wasn't fair to begin with. That it wasn't a fair trade. But maybe someone could, even if that someone wasn't Crowley.

All of his sudden emissary knowledge didn't cover this kind of thing, but he was still searching. There had to be a solution, a way to right things back home. There had to be. Stiles sat in the study at his desk by the window, staring blankly at his computer screen in front of him. Search term: Blood magic.

There was another option, a better deal that could be made, but one that he was almost sure wouldn't work. Some kind of temporal fold that would let him go back with all of the knowledge of what was to come, and put a stop to all of it before things got too bad. That would save Allison's life. Aiden's. All of the people at the station. At the hospital.

There had to be a way to make it happen. Those people didn't deserve to die because of his own innate weaknesses. Because of his inability to shut a door in his damn head. Because he'd let that thing inside of him, let it take him over to spare a stranger's life. He rubbed a hand over his face and opened another search box. Crossroad deals.

Scott wasn't really the same person that he had been before the seal had sent him home. Things were...harder now. Simple things, things he'd enjoyed and taken for granted before. Even waking up to find Allison next to him every day still made him just never want to leave bed, to just stay there with her forever and never let go. Because losing that, losing her was something he couldn't go through. Not again. Twice now, he'd lost her and God if the scenes weren't nearly identical, tattooed on his memory forever and playing in a loop in his dreams lately. First, a demon stabbed her while they fought a war that wasn't even their own. Then, the Oni, controlled by the Nogitsune that only looked like his best friend, but was completely void of any-and-everything that made Stiles, Stiles.

Usually so open and talkative, even to people outside of his immediate circle, Scott had been withdrawn since his return to Lawrence. He just couldn't quite get in the right swing of things again. And maybe that was okay, maybe it was justified, but he didn't like it. He didn't like being so...far away from who he had been before.

Stiles had been avoidant. Scott knew it was probably out of guilt, guilt that he didn't even deserve because by all accounts, he had no reason to feel it in the first place. Even back home, Scott didn't blame him. He couldn't. It wasn't his fault. It wasn't him. But of course, Stiles never saw it that way. And here. Here, Stiles hadn't even done any of that. He'd just watched it on that godforsaken tv show. Scott was tempted to ask one of the tech people to block the show from the whole damn house so none of them could watch whatever came next.

But that was all about to be over. Because Scott was done with being avoided and he was done with hiding. They had to talk about this. There was no way around it. Not a single one. Coming up empty when he stopped by his best friend's bedroom, Scott made his way through the house to the study, not even bothering to knock and give Stiles a warning. "This has to stop," was all he said, making a beeline for his best friend's desk.

He didn't have the heightened senses even as an emissary that Scott had as a werewolf. He didn't hear him coming. He was too focused -- wired, really -- on his research, cross-referencing, making notes in a document on his Macbook. So when the door flew open and Scott began talking, Stiles jumped about a foot, eyes widening at the unexpected disturbance. He quickly shut his computer before turning to face his best friend, heart beating a little too fast in his chest.

"Are you trying to give me an actual heart attack? Because werewolves might not be able to have them, but I'm pretty sure that I definitely can, tender age of seventeen or not." Or was he eighteen now? Technically with time travel involved...yeah he had no idea. Maybe he should think about asking someone who actually lived in this world.

The seriousness on Scott's face finally caught his attention and he held his breath, tensing a little. Yeah, he was pretty sure he wasn't going to like this conversation. Not if his suspicions about the subject at hand were accurate and...given everything, he had a feeling they probably were. He exhaled slowly. "What's up?"

"No," he started with a shake of his head, "but I'm also not letting you work your way away from this conversation," he said, grabbing a chair and sitting down across from Stiles, leaning forward slightly on the desk.

"You're avoiding me," Scott said rather pointedly. "Or, everything, I don't know. But it has to stop, Stiles. I...I have a hard enough time trying to readjust here and I come back to have my best friend flat-out avoid me like the plague. You can't possibly think that's helping."

His chest tightened and he looked down for a moment as guilt washed over him. He hadn't been trying to make things worse for Scott, that was for sure.

Everything and everyone was a lot more accurate than just Scott, really. He went to school and did his homework, but he didn't talk to people. Not that he'd ever been a big social person, but he'd been a lot more social when he'd first arrived in Lawrence seven months ago. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "Okay? I'm sorry."

Stiles and Scott had known each other for long enough that at this point, half the time they didn't even really need words. A look said a lot and the one that he was getting just then pulled at Scott. A lot. But he wasn't going to let it go at that.

"No, sorry doesn't-" he shook his head, "Stiles, I...I can't do this without you, okay? I can't. I mean, I wake up every day, expecting this to just be another dream and for it to all fade away like it has for months and I just...can't. Without you." he sighed and stared at the top of the desk for a few minutes before looking up again, "Why? Why aren't you talking to me? Why do you keep avoiding me?" Because maybe it was everyone and everything, but it felt a lot more personal some days.

He winced at the rejection of his apology. Sorry doesn't cut it. And he knew that was true. It didn't even come close. Not for avoiding him. Not for any of it. The rest of what he said made so little sense to Stiles that it actually kind of hurt.

It was he who'd gotten them into this mess to begin with. He swallowed heavily, looking down for a moment as he struggled to put it into words to make Scott understand. "I thought it might be easier for awhile," he said almost inaudibly. "If you didn't have to look at me after...everything that happened back there. That it might be easier to not have that constant visual reminder."

"Easier?" Scott echoed with a slight scoff, shaking his head. "This isn't easier." he said assuredly. "How is it supposed to be easier when the one person I always know I can count on suddenly...isn't there? I mean, who's the one that stayed up with me til midnight and watched scary movies my mom told us were off-limits? Who was the one that was there when my dad left? How do you think I can manage this without you?"

And maybe it sounded cheesy, but it was all true. Stiles had been Scott's best friends for basically his entire life. There wasn't anything the pair of them wouldn't do for the other. And going through this without Stiles, it just wasn't something Scott was okay with.

Stiles' expression was pained. He hadn't exactly been there for Scott in quite awhile back home now. But it didn't sound cheesy. For most of his life, Scott had been Stiles' only friend. His brother in every way that mattered, and avoiding him had been painful even if it had felt necessary at the time. Which was apparently a stupid way for him to feel.

He let out a breath before wrapping his arms around Scott in a tight hug, shutting his eyes. "I'm sorry," he said again. "I just didn't want to make things worse for you and I think I did anyway." I'm gonna fix it, he thought fiercely. Somehow. He would fix things for Scott back home.

"You were just trying to help," he said, returning the hug just as tightly. And he knew that, Scott knew that Stiles wouldn't ever intentionally try to hurt him. But that didn't mean it didn't happen. Especially now.

"But, it's easily fixed, right?" he asked he pulled back slowly, a hint of a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "I mean, it's us, so."

He nodded to the computer, "What were you doing anyway?" he asked curiously. Stiles had seemed pretty into whatever it was when Scott walked in.

He nodded against him, closing his eyes and leaning back in his chair when Scott pulled away. "Yeah," he said quietly in agreement. The amount of time they'd stayed upset with one another over the years was maybe a week tops -- and that was putting together all of the times they'd been upset with each other since they were four.

Stiles looked at his computer, holding his breath for a second because he couldn't exactly tell Scott the truth, but he could tell him a version of it. "Just compiling some research on supernatural kinds of stuff," he told him. That was the truth. He just wasn't offering his reasoning for doing so.

Scott nodded a little at the confirmation. He hadn't really doubted it or anything, but it was always nice to have things vocalized anyway. Scott and Stiles were never the types to stay mad at each other for long, even if Stiles could hold grudge like nobody's business at times, it was never with Scott.

Scott gave him an expectant look, waiting for an elaboration that never came. "What kind of research?"

Stiles could definitely hold a grudge, and very very few people were immune to his grudge holding. Scott, Lydia, his dad. Allison, too, these days. They'd all just been through too much for grudges against one another at this point.

He was really hoping Scott would drop it at "supernatural kinds of stuff" but obviously that wasn't going to be the case. He squirmed a little in his seat, eyes darting to his laptop momentarily. "You know, magic and everything." He shrugged.

Normally, he might have just dropped it. It probably wasn't that big of a deal, Stiles was always researching something. Especially these days. It was almost a hobby for him, it seemed. But considering recent events, it just felt more pointed than that. And the way Stiles reacted to questions about it didn't exactly give Scott any reason to discount those thoughts, either.

Scott leaned back in his own chair finally, letting out a sigh and givinh Stiles an exasperated look. "For what?" he asked again. "What are you trying to find?" he knew how his friend's mind worked and he knew it was more than just basic research. Most of that could be done either in classes given at the Center or with people around Lawrence. Clearly, Stiles was looking for something pretty specific.

Stiles really wished he'd just dropped it. He could lie well to a lot of people, but Scott had never been one of them. Except for when it came to why Scott's dad had left. It was the only secret he'd ever kept from Scott for more than about two minutes. But now there was such a necessity to do so and he hated it. He wanted so badly to fix things back home for his best friend. To somehow keep Allison alive. Or bring her back.

He sighed softly, rubbing his hands over his face, staring out the window. "A way to fix everything back home." He felt Scott's eyes still on him and he pursed his lips. "A way to save her." He didn't really care how as long as it worked.

Scott watched as Stiles ran his hands over his face and stared out the window. Maybe it was more serious than Scott had actually thought. And there it was. That part of Stiles that made him the best friend anyone could ever dream of having. He just wanted to fix it. To fix everything what was wrong back home. Scott's words were caught in his throat for a moment before he found it in him to finally speak again.

And as much as it pained him to think it, nevermind say it, Scott knew the truth. "You can't, Stiles," he mumbled. "You- nobody can fix it. It happened and...it's over." his voice wavered, try as he might to keep it steady he couldn't. "I'm sorry," he whispered, "but it's the truth...it's reality." A reality he'd tried a thousand times to bargain his way out of, to no avail. A reality he still didn't want to accept.

He didn't accept that. Couldn't accept it. It might be impossible, but until Stiles knew that for sure, he wasn't going to let it go. He would explore every single option, every damn possibility in this world and their own. And after he'd exhausted all of them, then he'd concede to defeat. But not until then.

Stiles stared out the window overlooking the pool, lifting a hand to his mouth and chewing on his thumbnail. "What if it isn't?" he whispered. "What if there's a way?" His chest was tight as he turned his head to look at Scott, eyes troubled. "I'm going to keep looking, man. Just in case."

Scott shook his head, "Don't," he said softly. "Don't obsess over this, please, Stiles." he couldn't quite bring himself to look at Stiles, or anything that wasn't his hands clasped on the desk in that moment. He knew he was just trying to help, but there was no way Scott could handle losing Stiles to an obsession of fixing things that couldn't be changed.

He shut his eyes when Scott wouldn't look at him. He didn't understand why he wouldn't want Stiles to try and figure this out. Yeah, he tended to get obsessed about things, but at least this was a lot more important than most things he obsessed over. But he didn't want to upset Scott anymore than he already had, either.

"Okay," he said after a moment. "No obsessing." He could research without getting obsessive about it. He could look for and find answers without letting it completely consume him.
