It felt like it had been years since she'd been home. John's hand in hers, saying goodbye to Sherlock. In reality, it had been less than twenty-four hours. But god, what a day it had been.
The pretty young doctor, Martha, had checked her vitals and all seemed to be fine. No true shock settling in. And the couple running the bar, they had been wonderful. Even if she was still dubious as to their whole Apocalypse story, it seemed the only thing that made sense at the moment and she was desperate to hold on to anything that made sense. Because at that moment, little in her life did.
Two and a half years. If what they were saying was true... If people were truly pulled from all points in time, her husband had been there for two and a half years. And they'd only met about two years prior. He didn't know her. It wasn't simply that he didn't know they were having a baby, or they won't married, or they weren't even in love yet. No. John Watson had never even met her. She had come along a few months after Sherlock's...well, "death". And John, apparently, had come not long after it. That gap was enough to break her heart.
She would have sat at the bar, but there were far too many onlookers and she was a bit too pregnant to sit comfortably on the stools anyway. So she sat tucked in a booth instead, dwelling. She'd have to let the young woman know her choice as to where she was going to stay for the night. Or a few nights, she supposed. According to...well, the other Sherlock, the odds of her getting to go home soon were slim. She'd have to figure out something long term soon.
The piece of cake in front of her had too much sugar to be anything resembling good for her, and she just didn't care. It tasted all right, and Martha had made good on her promise of proper tea and really, that's all that mattered. Cake and tea wouldn't fix her current situation, but they might help ease her broken heart a bit.
She had only just gotten him back. Now it looked like she was going to lose him all over again.
