Kol Mikaelson [Open to Elijah Mikaelson]; Musing over some things
Friday afternoon, Feburary 28, 2014; Outside around the Mikaelson property
TBD/In progress

Truth was, he had a lot to think about.

Kol had a lot on his mind lately. Some of it was less important than other bits, but it all bundled up in one giant clusterfuck of a mess in his head and he needed some time to just...decompress. Even if it would only be for a fleeting moment, it would be enough for now.

He had taken to wandering the property his family's home sat on. And that was part of it, wasn't it? Home. He was really, legitimately calling this place home these days and that was strange, to say the least. He couldn't quite pinpoint when that had happened, but he could feel it now, clearer than he had in years. This place, crazy and mix-matched as it may be, was really home to him now. He had a life here. He had his family here and they were, mostly, on at the very least descent terms. He had friends. He had Crowley. He had things he'd always assumed would only be a distant dream and things he'd never even so much as considered. By all accounts, Kol was actually really comfortable here.

But he wasn't really happy. Not that happiness had ever been much of a concern to him, bar where his family were concerned. More than anything, he'd been focused on selfish pleasure. But happiness, true happiness wasn't something he'd ever worried about. But here...things were different. Or they were supposed to be. So far they hadn't been, really, and that bothered him.

Everywhere the Mikaelsons had gone, all the times they had moved and started over had been a chance for things to be different. And every time, things always ended up the same. People feared them, hated them because of that fear, and plotted against them because of it as well. No one was ever true to their word when it came to the Mikaelsons. No one ever gave them the benefit of the doubt they allowed others. All because of blinding fear and hatred. And as different as he had hoped it would be here, the people of Lawrence had so quickly proven him wrong with their threats and contingency plans.

But Kol had seen an opportunity. A way to try and make some semblance of peace. And maybe it wouldn't work for all of them, but if just some of them could look past the arrogance and the fear and the hate... maybe it would be worth it. That was why he'd made the post that he had, asking for opinions, for suggestions, for simple honesty. And he had actually gotten responses, made it through each one without arguing. Truth was, he had a lot to think about after that.

Kol still hadn't mentioned any of this to his siblings, or even Crowley. He just wasn't ready for that conversation yet. He knew Rebekah and Caroline would be supportive, Elijah would be proud, but Nik and Crowley. He wasn't sure. With Nik, his first assumption would be some kind of mockery, but his brother, on more than one occasion, had surprised him since they had been in Lawrence, so he wouldn't put it past him to do so once again. And Crowley...well, he had no idea how he'd take it at all. And all of those unknowns...they made him uncomfortable, to say the least. But he supposed the only thing that would make that go away was to bite the bullet and tell them. And he just wasn't quite ready yet.

So instead, he just wandered the Mikaelson property, now on the way back toward the house from the stables, lost somewere inside his own head, trying to figure out where to go from here.

It seemed that ever since arriving in Lawrence, his perfect control was slipping out of his hands. He felt his calm patience turning into anger half the time, and any time somebody wanted to insult his siblings, he felt like ripping their heads off their shoulders.

They did not know them like Elijah did. They could not see the growth that Klaus was making every day. Of course his brother still had his awful moments, but nobody had really had a life quite like Niklaus. Nobody had abuse and torment quite like Niklaus. It was his job, his duty to protect his siblings and keep them safe, and if that meant being the bad guy that they focused on instead...did he not owe that to them? Did he not owe Niklaus for not being their to protect him as he should have been?

But now there was Henrik to think of. He couldn't be tempermental anymore. He had to be here for his baby brother. That child had lost too many family members to lose another one. He would not let Ruby Winchester provoke him into anything rash and dangerous. He would not leave Henrik...

But if she were to hurt the tiny boy? Well then, people would see just how deadly Elijah Mikaelson could be.

Heading out towards the stables, he came to a stop as he saw Kol coming back towards the house. He hadn't had much of a chance to speak with him regarding this Ruby nonsense, but now seemed as good a time as any.

"You doing alright, brother?"

"What?" the word was jerked out of his mouth as his head snapped up, confronted with his eldest brother. Was he doing all right? Well, wasn't that just a loaded question. How did he answer that? Kol wasn't sure. He wasn't sure if he was all right. Or if he was losing grip. Or what the hell else his other options may be at this point. "Yeah, fine," he mumbled quickly, in hopes of brushing the topic off. "M'always fine, you know that, Elijah."

"Where're you headed, then?" He asked, assuming he was headed to the stables, but at this point Kol would grasp at anything for passing conversation, just to avoid what was truly on his mind. "I was just headed back to the house, to--" To what? To think? To be incredibly Salvatore and brood? "well, I don't actually know what I'm going to do, haven't planned that far ahead yet." Not that Kol ever truly planned anything. That was completely beside the point.

Elijah arched an eyebrow. Well he had tried to assure him rather quickly that he was alright. Too quickly for his likely, truth be told. That wasn't like Kol. Not at all. "Is that right? Why can't you even look me in the eye when you say you're fine then?" Elijah challenged with some arrogance. He knew his siblings well.

"I was heading to the stables to check on Hades and make sure Caroline's mare is alright. It's pregnant and Henrik wants the foal, so I'll do whatever I can to ensure that horse is alright and that our little brother gets what he wants."

The challenging tone did nothing to deter him, in fact it only gave him more determination to prove the elder Mikaelson wrong. Kol straightened up to his full height, looked Elijah straight in the eye and spoke quite clearly as he said, "I assure you, brother, I'm fine." But then, if his siblings did not know every mannerism, every tell that he had, who would? So he didn't truly expect Elijah to back down on the subject. Oh, he hoped for it, but he certainly did not expect it. Expectation only brought disappointment in the end.

"He deserves it," Kol said, wholehearted in that comment, the smile playing on his lips at the idea of it one of the most genuine he'd worn lately. "He deserves anything and everything his heart desires." Except for their parents to show up. That was one thing he could not quite bend to Henrik's will for. Though, he hoped at least, the boy wouldn't wish for them to be here after having heard the entire story.

"You were lying then, you are lying now. So I will ask this only once, brother. What is it that troubles you?" Really, as if Elijah did not have enough to deal with these days. He was half expecting to collapse in agonizing pain at any minute. He wondered if Kol had talked to Crowley yet, maybe the man could control Ruby.

"I'd give him the moon if I could," Elijah admitted. "He's still so shy. He doesn't realize we have the means to give him whatever he wants. That we would gladly give him whatever he wants."

Clinging to the conversation about their youngest brother, Kol blatantly ignored the first part of Elijah's comments. "I don't think it's really set in yet. And... I think most of what he wants is much simpler than anything modern can give him. He's made such a big switch in time. We got to grow with the world, he was just thrust into all the modernness of it all and it's probably incredibly overwhelming for him." He shrugged a bit, "And he's still learning English. It's not exactly the easiest language to learn, and I think that's part of why he's still so reserved, from everyone else. He can't understand them nor can they, him. It's got to be rather unnerving."

Knowing he wouldn't get to ignore the heart of Elijah's question, though, Kol rocked back on the heel of his sneakers and spun in a half-circle before he started walking again, back towards the stables where Elijah had originally been headed before he'd interrupted him. "A lot of things," he said honestly, not sure entirely where to begin. "Ruby, for one." seemed as good a place as any to start.

Elijah nodded his head, he understood what Kol was saying about Henrik, and he agreed. All of them were helping him adjust as best as they could, but there was only so much they could do. In time, he would come around, and they would be there to introduce him to Lawrence. He only hoped they would treat Henrik fairly. He deserved to have friends.

"I have been thinking about her too," he admitted with a frown as he leaned against the wall, staring at his brother. "I've been thinking about her a lot recently, about her threats. Against us, against Rebekah. We we are supposed to do about it.."

Kol often wondered how things would go for Henrik, once he did come around and become more of an active part of the greater displaced population of Lawrence. Would he be treated badly simply because of them, because of who his family was? Kol sincerely hoped that wasn't the case. He deserved fair treatment on his own merit and none of their own.

He nodded his agreement, slowing to a stop as Elijah leaned against the wall. "I don't know," he said honestly, "We can't." he shrugged. "Not if...we want to ever have hope of escaping the ridiculous notion that we are inherently evil and unbending to change." That was certainly far closer to what he'd really been thinking about than Kol had intended, but he knew Elijah couldn't make those kind of conclusions, not yet at least. And he hoped he could veer the conversation in a more direct way. "It's not that they shouldn't have their plans. They should, just in case. It'd be stupid of them not to, really. But to have them discussed where they can so easily leaked back to us is equally stupid. And blatantly threatening us, soulless husband running amok or not, it's not any better."

"But honestly...our best bet is to leave it alone." He admitted, "If we do anything, anything at all to instigate or draw her out or anything at all, it will be on our heads and she'll be the victim."

"My concern is that they will treat him differently, or tell him the awful things we have done. It would not surprise me if this town tried to turn Henrik against us. Tried to make him hate us. It seems like something some of them, namely Ruby would do. She knows that would hurt us the most. More than any spell she could come up with..."

"No, we can't do anything, but that doesn't mean I have to like her threatening the lot of you. Moreover, what Winchester did to Rosemarie was wrong. I'll admit I do not like the girl much, I granted her her freedom because she showed loyalty to Trevor for 500 years, and I admire loyalty, but she seems to enjoy provoking Niklaus when she gets brazen enough or drunk enough. However, she's your friend, and was one of your best friends in 1492. I an understand why you're upset, and frankly, I am too. If he is going to attack unprovoked, why shouldn't someone take him down. Not kill him, of course, but stop him. What would have happened if he attacked Bo? Or someone else equally undeserving. Ruby may not want her husband dead, but he needs to be stopped and her threatening the lot of you...it's not going to do any good. If she has to attack anyone. I'd rather it be me. I failed all of you in our humanity and if it means I can protect oyu now, then so be it."

"I'm agreeable to leaving her alone, as long as she leaves us alone. I wont provoke anything, but if she lifts a finger to my family..."

Kol hadn't even considered that and the mere idea of it had a funny way of both make him completely livid and drop on him like a weight with the realization. "They can try," he mumbled, voice just a bit more gravelly than usual. "we won't let them." There was a conviction in his voice that said this was non-negotiable, it was a simple fact. And he couldn't imagine any of his siblings arguing against that conviction. They had only just gotten the boy back, there was no way that any of them could suffer losing him again.

Kol ran both hands over his face. He'd already fought this fight. He'd had this argument and quite honestly, he was over it. But he could understand Elijah's need to talk about it, so he didn't fight the conversation. "I don't like it either, but it is what it is. And that...is the exact same thing it's always been. Threats. Plots, plans against us... it never changes." He shook his head. He was so caught up on that and it honestly bugged him just how much it all bothered him. "They should. And they've all spoken about it, about how he needs to be handled. Crowley sent a pack of his bloody hounds after him, for fuck's sake. Everyone realizes that the threat that is Sam Winchester needs to be detained. But the second I say it, she flies off the handle. It's bloody ridiculous." He shook his head again, a bit more furiously this time, "But honestly, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter because we can't act on any threat she sends to us, or we're only proving their theory right. And...it shouldn't be you. It shouldn't be Bekah, or Nik. It shouldn't even fucking happen at all. But if it does...we'll figure out a way to handle it that won't backfire entirely." Not that he remotely had a clue as to how they would manage that, but he had to hope that it was possible, somehow.

"I know," Kol said softly, lifting his eyes to lock with his brother's own. "She touches any of us and the remaining will...not take it lightly." In all of their fighting and bickering and even at times disownment of one another, the single thing that the Mikaelson siblings could always be sure to agree on was no one touched their family. No one.

"I wont allow them to turn him against us either," Elijah promised, placing a hand on his brothers shoulder comfortingly, giving him a gentle squeeze. That is the one thing they would all agree on. Henrik would not be brought into their drama. No matter what.

"She has a stick up her ass, Kol." It was not common for Elijah to use such language, but it was true. "She is just looking for someone to blame, and of course of course, it has to be us. It would seem that even though you are Crowley's lover, she seems intent on making a target out of you. Out of us. I do not like it. Not one bit. But we will stand as one. United. Always and Forever. For now we will play calmly and quietly, and we won't get involved. We will prove them wrong about us. About ALL of us."

He gave Elijah a tiny smile at the reassuring hand being placed on his shoulder. He wasn't sure it was all that much help in the grand scheme, but for now he decided to push the idea out of his mind. No one had started poisoning his baby brother against him and he had no reason to assume they would any time soon. At least, not for now. And if there ever came a time that it happened, they could deal with it then. But getting worked up about something that wasn't even happening was senseless at this point.

"I know," he nodded, though he couldn't help the slight amusement at his older brother's language, it was just so rare for him to speak that way. "I just get so tired of us being the ones people fall back on when they want someone to blame. She basically hates me, only barely tolerated me because of Crowley, but it was never sincere." he said, sighing as he moved to lean against the stable next to Elijah, though he didn't stay on his feet for long, sliding slowly down the wall to the ground, knees drawn halfway toward his chest.

There were still so many things stirring inside his mind, things weighing down on him, and he just wished that things could slow down for awhile. But that was something he was mostly convinced could never happen.

"But surely Crowley would make her suffer in the way only he, the new King of Hell could if she were to hurt you." If Crowley wouldn't protect his brother, than Elijah had seriously over estimated his approval for the man. Without proof, however, all Elijah could do was frown and hope that Crowley would protect him as he would protect Katerina. "And you have to know that we'd protect you. All of us. Nobody is taking this family away from us ever again."

"She's disliked me ever since Katerina chose Damon over me. I guess Damon was a friend of hers? Figures she'd like one vampire from our world but hate the rest of us. She's a hypocrite."

"He's not going to just let her hurt me, but...fuck, I hate that he's in the middle of all this." he admitted, shoving a hand through his hair, both hands reaching up to lace behind his head, letting out a long sigh. Oh, how he missed the days before he cared. "I know, I'm not...I'm not worried about that. I just- I don't want to- Everything is so fucked." His own incapability of articulating what he truly wanted to say was frustrating.

"Well, let's be honest, I hate Katerina but you're clearly the better choice." he said, very matter-of-factly.

"Of course I am," Elijah smirked choosing to ignore the comments Kol was making about hating his girlfriend, "I'm rich, I'm educated and I'm cultured. Damon Salvatore is nothing but an obnoxious child chewing on his little brother's left over bone and clearly cannot cope with the fact that like Elena, Katerina loved Stefan far more than she loved him. the boy clearly tries to hard." He smirked and patted Kol on the head teasingly, "kind of like you, little brother. It's amazing you two weren't best friends, really."

"Clearly," He said, smirking slightly, until the little rib that Elijah threw his way quickly made it fade. "Really?" He arched an eyebrow at his brother for that one.

There was a quiet lull for a long moment before Kol finally spoke again, looking carefully up at his older brother. He was the one he knew beyond a single ounce of doubt wouldn't judge, wouldn't mock him, and even still he wasn't sure he wanted to talk about it. So he started simply, in case he decided to back out halfway through. "Do you ever just womder why it always turns out this way, every time?"

"Because we have a history," Elijah said leaning against the wall, "we've done bad things. All of us. Me included. We've killed, we've helped take down nations and shape and change history through less than honest methods. We aren't goodness and light and we've never claimed to be and we've never tried to be. We will do anything to protect each other, even if that means other people getting hurt. They know that and they know they are at a disadvantage. So of course people are gong to judge. Of course they are going to hate. Sometimes it's justified and sometimes it isn't. Unfortunately there is always someone there ready to tell of all the wrongs we've done before people can judge us fairly."

"But this place, it's supposed to be about second chances. They all say it. But then, where's the follow-through?" He sighed. He knew where it was, why it was lacking, he'd spoken to people about it and it was practically eating at him not talking to someone he actually had some interest invested in about it.

For a moment, he was quiet again, staring out at nothing before eventually, his gaze shifted up towards Elijah again. And for a second, one fleeting, barely noticeable second, he felt like he was a kid again, looking up to his big brother for one reason or another. But this time, it was different. This time, rather than looking to him for advice, he was looking for simple acceptance. Though, unspoken, it probably didn't mean much.

"I know it is," Elijah said softly, almost soothingly. "And hopefully one day, we will get it. Our actions haven't always been...the best, but it has always been to protect our family, or to protect others from getting in Niklaus' way when he has been angered or backed into a corner. We've never sought out to hurt people because we could. That should count for something, but it appears it doesn't."

"It may not mean much coming from me, but I've seen the change in you since you've arrived here, little brother, and I've never been more proud of you."

"I hope you're right. One day, I hope we do get that." Kol knew he was right, he knew they weren't the epitome of righteousness or sanity most of the time, but they hadn't been completely terrible during their time here. So maybe one day...

"Thanks," was all he could manage to mumble at that little gush of pride from his brother.

There was something very comforting about the tone in Elijah's voice, it was something that really did make Kol feel like a young child again. All very reminiscent of the times when Elijah would comfort him as a boy. That seemed to make him relax, and apparently that led to him talking, really talking, about what was on his mind. "I asked," he said suddenly. "I made a post, and I asked why we get crucified for things others get excused for."

"Did you?" Elijah's tone was one of gentle amusement, and curiosity all mixed into one. He had not expected Kol to do such a thing, to want to do such a thing. His brotehr was surprising him more and more with each passing day. Becoming a man that Elijah was truly proud of. "And what did they say? Why do we get blamed and others do not?"

He nodded a bit. He could only imagine how ridiculous it all sounded coming from him, of all people. Kol wouldn't have ever been the one to do these sorts of things in the past, but as Elijah himself had pointed out, things had changed since they had been here. He had changed, in a lot of ways.

"Arrogance, arguing at every turn, constant reminders of our power and their lack of it where death is concerned." Those were the most common answers, at least, and Kol had kind of taken them to be the most important answers because of it.

"So basically the standard issues that everyone and their mother has basically had with us," Elijah said with a smirk as he rolled his eyes, "you would think they'd get some better material," Elijah sighed, "I suppose we could learn to temper our arrogance. All of us, but Niklaus will always be Niklaus, and I frankly don't think he cares what they think. But if this is something that truly bothers you, I will help you strive to change their opinions of us."

"More or less," he shrugged. He supposed with the surface answer he'd given him, there wasn't much more Elijah could glean from it. And really, it was too much to get into anyway, to break it down piece by piece, comment by comment. "I'll show it to you. I planned on showing it to all of you."

He stared up at Elijah, an oddly child-like sense of helplessness on his face. "I just...I can't. Not again. Not here. Supposed to be different."
