WHO: Caroline and Klaus
WHAT: annoyance led to walking out and following after
WHEN: Today. Right after Care told Klaus she was going out.
WHERE: Rome
WARNINGS: TBD

There were a lot of reasons for her anger, and truly, the conversation she’d had with Klaus and read him having with Rebekah was only the tip of the iceberg. Instead of yelling at him, of saying something she was pretty sure she would regret not long after saying it, she’d decided to get out, to just go for a walk and put some distance between them. Maybe it wasn’t her best idea considering she didn’t know the city and also because Klaus wasn’t exactly the best at deciphering others feelings and was no doubt confused as to why she had left. A small part of Caroline felt bad about that, but she was too annoyed to truly care much about his own precarious emotions. Instead she was trying to get a handle on her own because when she didn’t have control of her emotions or when she let them run away from her bad things tended to happen. Out of control bitey things and she didn’t want to do that.

So she walked, not really caring where she was headed, and unfortunately not taking in the sights either. Which she’d kick herself for later considering all she was passing by as she wandered. Eventually she ended up at the Colosseum, easily compelling her way inside--which earlier in the year would have given her pause but now seemed second nature to do. And that was part of the problem, wasn’t it?

She walked past the Gladiators that seemed to always be around, posing for photo ops, and sat down next to some other tourists on one of the stone slabs everyone seemed to be using for seating.

Caroline looked out at the other tourists roaming around, watching them take photographs, pointing out different parts of the walls. Families, couples, groups of friends and colleagues all enjoying the December day and her gaze traveled with one couple in particular. Their hair colors reminding her of Rebekah and Stefan and so she watched them walk hand in hand, looking like a young couple in love, and wasn’t this how her two friends should be right then? Enjoying their rather impulsive decision, but still enjoying their time together.

But nooooo. That just wasn’t allowed.

Caroline glared at nothing in particular, trying not to scowl as she leaned back against the stone slab, renewing her effort to curb her annoyance. She felt like she was being watched though and that really wasn’t helping her effort at control. Even if she had a pretty good idea who was watching her so intently.

Apparently something in that stream of feeling and weakness had struck a chord. Caroline had walked over to him, swearing she would never walk away from him much as he apparently would aggrivate her and he couldn't deny he probably would. He was good at that. But it was all so new to him, letting someone that close, letting the guards down, actually pleading with her, was this how it was to be, fighting and storming off and then explaining she still loved him. He wasn't entirely sure what had happened or which of them had won, but he suspected she had. It seemed likely.

"Alright." he finally said. "But you have to bear with me sometimes, all of this, everything like this is newer to me than I'd like to admit. You're the first in a long time to get this close to me." Possibly the first ever, oh there had been women, countless over the centuries, some had even surrvived the experiance. But none could he have claimed to love as he did her.

And he'd only really nearly killed her twice.

"And I won't lie and tell you I cared for those people. Jenna was an unwitting pawn in a wider game, a sacrifice. Jeremy Gilbert...well, you know my opinion on that boy and it was a mercy I didn't make him and his sister suffer what Kol did at his hand. But they were important to you, all of them. And that matters to me. Your humanity matters to me. Because its who I fell in love with. And yeah, being with me, maybe you start to realise you're finding things easier to stomach, part of that will happen. But, and god I can't believe I'm saying this, there are those of our kind that manage it, Stefan, Alexia and her love, her for almost four centuries now. You can retain yourself, be that voice at my side urging me to show mercy. And there will be times when I won't, when the crime or the insult is too great. But for you Caroline I would do a great deal just on your word. And I don't ever want you to lose that."

She couldn’t help but smile at what he said. Not so much the parts about not caring about the people she missed, though it wasn’t as though they had to have the same friends...did Klaus even have friends? She made another mental note to work on Klaus and friend making. But the rest of it, the reminders that there were definitely those of their kind who had retained their humanity through the years, a big example being Lexi, meant a lot to Caroline. Also the reminder that he loved her for her humanity, not inspite of it.

“Don’t worry. I’ll always be there to point out when you should be showing mercy or when its at least not worth your time and effort to get involved.” She did understand though that there would be times when mercy wasn’t something he would be able to do and somehow she would come to grips with that as a reality. It wasn’t as though she hadn’t killed before to protect those she loved. Though not quite in the way that Klaus was known to protect his siblings or exact justice--vengeance--whatever it was being called that week.

“Did you honestly think that I was walking away forever?” Because she was going to feel really awful if that was the case. Caroline definitely hadn’t meant to scare him like that. Sometimes she forgot how new he was at relationships.

She hadn't said she's try to stop him all the time, and he really did appreciate that from her. Caroline could ask a great deal of him and he found it so dammed hard to deny her. But he had before and he would again if the ends justified the rather messy means. And she'd once again said she'd always be there.

Which meant a lot because yes, he had thought that. "I did." he said simply, not wanting her to feel bad or anything but deciding he should probably stick with the whole honesty thing, she seemed fond of it. "Its not your fault, its probably me and just how badly I do at all this. I expected you'd had enough. Just like Rebekah and Kol."

It bothered him, losing them, of course it did, the daggers had always kept them loyal or kept them near him and without them he couldn't help but feel that he was losing the control he so prized. And his lovesick fool of a sister, married now. It was a mess and his only constant was the beautiful blonde worried about her own humanity.

"Why do you stay? I mean I understand you love me. You tell me enough, but why are you so willing to believe of me what they've long given up hope of."

“Because you show me that its still there. That you may be a monster--I’m a monster--we’re kind of all monsters. Just to differing degrees and I kinda doubt I’ll ever get to the degree the rest of you have, but you never really know.” It was more she hoped she wouldn’t, but Caroline could see it happening under certain circumstances. Maybe. “You show me day in and day out that I can have hope in you by how you treat me, how you listen to me, how you at least try and compromise with me.”

Something she’d seen time and again that he did not do with other people. Even his own siblings. “I don’t really want to change you. I know you thought that and maybe there was a time that I thought that, but I do want to bring out those parts of you that you try to hide away. Or like only let shine through your paintings or with me now. You feel pain, you love, you get angry, jealous, happy...and so you’ve got humanity to you in all that darkness you’ve surrounded yourself with. I know you like to say that I’m your light, but I see the light in you as well.”

She shrugged, not sure if her thoughts really made that much sense. “Plus I’m sure we both know by now that I’m drawn to your dark. Sometimes at least.”

Klaus wasn't entirely sure what was happening to him anymore. How he'd gone from being the feared and despised Original Hybrid to...a boyfriend. To a brother that his siblings seemed to want only good things for, they wanted him to change and give up on the centuries of paranoia but he wasn't sure he was capable of that. If he ever had been. Caroline though, she didn't ask that of him, she asked compromise, she asked for discussion. She had a faith in him that he'd never had in himself, and he loved her for it.

And she might have been the only person in the world, in any world, that claimed to see light in him. Even he didn't. There was no point to it for him, nothing it could gain him, nothing he could use. His paintings were the only time he allowed his innermost feelings to be shown, and even then of course not everyone understood it. Because some people were really just ridiculous.

But Caroline Forbes. The young woman wise beyond her years, the cheerleader who was capable of so much more than one might expect of her and the new vampire finding her way in the world around her, and she'd found her way to him, through a lot ofmis starts, through unfortunate incidents involving ex boyfriends lushy mothers. And maybe she was drawn to the darkness in him just as he was drawn to her light, but here, in this most beautiful place in Europe, he pulled her toward him.

"Sometimes hm?" He thought maybe he neeeded to reestablish some of what he was known for back home. No massacares, he was being good after all, but this city, just for one night, they could be royalty. "Feel up to a night on the town love. Leaving the morals at the door?"

Caroline wasn’t sure exactly what she had said for him to pull her towards him, for his presence to feel a little more lifted to her. She’d only told the truth but she supposed it was something Klaus had never heard before and probably hadn’t expected anyone to see in him, to want in him. But she truly did see a light in all of his darkness and she didn’t want it to get swallowed whole, wanted to bring it out to shine, even if it only happened around her.

She arched a brow at his suggestion, wondering what he had in mind. A night on the town could mean so many things to Klaus and while she truly believed he wouldn’t cause some kind of bloodbath because he knew she wouldn’t approve, she couldn’t help but be fairly interested in what it would all entail. What could it hurt to let loose a little, to see exactly what it was like to travel in style with him? It was what she wanted and she’d give up that bit of control and put it in his hands. It wasn’t as though she couldn’t get it back when she needed it.

“Do I get a new dress out of it? Because I think I can be persuaded if I get a new dress.” She leaned closer to drop a kiss on his nose. “And shoes!”

She was wary, he supposed he could hardly blame her given his infamy. But he also knew she was entirely aware he'd give her the world if she'd only ask for it, and so this, agreeing to come with him, live even just one night as he did. Part of him wanted to show her what they were now, that listening to Stefan and his dull life of abstinance was hardly the way forward, and people didn't have to die.

She could just give in, just a little, to her true nature and maybe it would be the making of her.

"If you want a new dress then you shall have it. This is of course the other thing about the Italians, they do know how to dress." He turned towrds her after she'd kissed him and took her hand in his own. "Shoes, well we'll see, I was fairly convinced you already owned 50% of the worlds shoes given the other 50% clearly belong to my sister." he teased, pulling her to her feet and taking a moment just to marvel at where they were stood. "This place, this one structure has seen so much, good, bad, bloodbaths, wars, insanity, betrayal. Thousands of years of human history, in truth, even I with a thousand years of immortality on my side can stand somewhere like this and feel awed. And they're still going, the Romans, less conquest and all but they still hold to their pride. Because why wouldn't they. Their forefathers built a legend that to this day still stands."

He loved this place, this city. And finally getting to show her, the world outside of Mystic Falls, outside of Lawrence was what he had wanted for her for so long. She deserved the world on a silver plate, and he would give it to her.

“For that shoe comment I’m now making you buy me the dress. No compulsion allowed!” she teased, lacing their fingers together as she tugged him away from the monument. “And maybe you only have a thousand years to however long the Romans have been around, but I’d say you did pretty good about making your own legend. At least back in our world.” The amount of vampires and other supernatural creatures who quaked in fear at his name was kind of crazy. But there was no denying that Klaus was that boogeyman. He just happened to have sides to him that weren’t feared monster as well.

“You’ve also got the whole holding onto pride thing too.” Which was not always a good thing in her own opinion, but she understood it. “And if we’re going to leave our morals at the door...just...promise me that you won’t let me kill anyone.” Because she had a feeling this evening would involve drinking from the vein and it thrilled her to think about doing that, but she didn’t want to hurt anyone. Definitely didn’t want to kill anyone.

If he could help her stop if she went too far then she’d attempt it. She did have pretty amazing control, but it was still something she worried about because Caroline couldn’t deny that her first kill had been a high she couldn’t quite replicate.

Klaus allowed her to walk him away from the structure but turned them slightly so they were walking toward the Forum.

"I won't let you kill. I may not care, I may have a thousand years of not caring but you, your humanity means too much to you. That said I think you need to learn to hone your control. You're not Stefan. Or the English and Irish pair. One sip will not make you a monster. I assure you love, you can give in all you like and I'll be there to stop you going too far. Much as I'm not spending money on a dress I can just compel out of someone."

Pride though, oh pride was why he'd wanted to show her where they were now. The Roman Forum. The site of so much history. The temples to the various gods, the various important buildings of the day, and then the remains of the Senate. And as they finally reached it, the place he found he understood most. Because yes, he had made his own legend, and he couldn't help but feel flattered by the fact she understood that even if she didn't agree with the methods he'd used to get there. And there was another man like that. One he'd always been facinated by.

"Julius Ceaser, heard of him?" he asked, curious as to just how much the American school system taught of ancient history. "He was an unparallelled leader, feared by his enemies, he shaped the world to what it should be, made this great city unequaled. And died before he could see his great work fulfilled, betrayed you see, by those closest to him. The Ides of March they called it. And he was warned, warned not to go to the senate on that day, but his vanity, it led him here all the same."

Klaus glanced around at the other tourists before helping Caroline step onto the slightly raised stone, all that was left of the Roman Senate building. "There's still a sense of it in this place, of what this city has seen, of the people, the genius minds that stood in this place, numerous emperors, senators, generals, Mark Antony you'll have heard of him I presume." Love had made Mark Antony weak. Love for an Egyptian Queen had destroyed him. He wasn't going to mention that of course, not here, that wouldn't happen with them.

But this of course was where it had all been so right for him. "He revenged them you see, those that had betrayed, murdered his friend, his leader." He leaned in closer to her, "Thou art the ruins of the noblest man that ever lived in the tide of times. Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood! Over thy wounds now do I prophesy. Which, like dumb mouths, do ope their ruby lips, To beg the voice and utterance of my tongue. A curse shall light upon the limbs of men; Domestic fury and fierce civil strife shall cumber all the parts of Italy; Blood and destruction shall be so in use, And dreadful objects so familiar that mothers shall but smile when they behold their infants quarter'd with the hands of war; All pity choked with custom of fell deeds: And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge with Ate by his side come hot from hell, Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice, Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war; That this foul deed shall smell above the earth with carrion men, groaning for burial."

He repeated the words almost reverently.

"Shakespeare, mostly a hack but I should think he got that part close enough. They all died, the traitors, to a man." He wasn't sure why he was comparing himself to Ceaser here, of all places here. But he thought it anyone would find meaning in what he'd said it would be her

She couldn’t help that her knees felt like jelly when he started quoting Shakespeare in that damn accent of his. Did he have any clue just how hot he was when he did that? How much she wanted to jump him then and there and to hell with who might see her try to ravish him? Except, Caroline wasn’t about to do that with the sea of people around them, tourists and natives enjoying a day of sightseeing.

“Pride led to his downfall,” Caroline replied, taking Klaus’ hands again and lacing their fingers together. “He believed he was indestructible but he wasn’t in the way he believed at least. Though, joke was kind of on those who betrayed him because his name lived on, even more so than Mark Antony’s--though who doesn’t know about his and Cleopatra’s story, come on--so Caesar kind of got the last laugh. They might have killed him, but he was a legend who was greater than any man.”

But she understood, or at least she thought she did. Those who had betrayed Caesar were killed just as those who tried to betray Klaus met untimely ends. Or endured torturous lives full of running in fear. She wasn’t all that surprised that he’d liken himself to Caesar. Klaus was his own kind of legend back home, had been for more years than she was able to comprehend and there was little doubt in her mind that he would continue to be so for many more centuries to come.

She peered closely at him, pursing her lips as she regarded him. “Which, I love you, Klaus, but don’t go getting yourself killed just so your legend lives on. I swear I will bring you back from the grave just to kill you myself then. And your siblings would so help me.”
