Who: Armand & Rhys
Where: The park, where Rhys has ended up
When: October 15th, around two in the afternoon
What: Armand gives Rhys an amulet and possibly helps him fit in better
Status: In progress

It was always interesting meeting someone else from a time or place vastly different from this one. And Rhys seemed to be a very interesting person. He had made some good friends here, but a person could always use more friends. Especially since his sister and Percy were gone. He was still not quite over that loss, but with the explosion and the aftermath he had had other things to think about. At least until the last few days.

It hadn't hit him until he saw Belle's comments that he knew Princess Addie, and he hoped that someone she knew from her own world arriving would comfort her. He had belatedly seen her post about being trapped in her apartment and knew she was probably more shaken up than he was. Having an old friend from home would probably help her very much. Hopefully she would see Rhys's post and speak to him shortly. For now, Armand could find him and give him the spare amulet, make sure he stayed safe, and most likely try and find him some clothing that would help him blend into modern Lawrence.

He made it to the fountain quickly and saw Rhys with a laptop on his lap. He wondered how he had gotten it, but that was a question that he could ask later. And getting him new clothing would definitely be a priority. They did not look to be the same size unfortunately so there would probably need to be some shopping done. Or if his friend at the wardrobe department at the theater was there, he could always ask her. A favor for Marguerite's brother would not be too hard, though he did not like to have to explain her disappearance. But that could keep for the moment. He went up to the young man and cleared his throat as to not startle him. "You must be Rhys," Armand said with a smile. "I am Armand."

Rhys found this whole thing to be fascinating. Daunting, yes, and perhaps a little unnerving, but fascinating nonetheless. Now that he knew (or had heard) that Princess Adelina was nearby, he felt much more at ease- true, this new world held its own dangers, but he (selfishly) would much rather have her near than out of reach back in Bamarre.

At Armand's arrival, Rhys set the computer aside, and bowed, deeply, his hand flat against his chest. A smile belied his clear joy as he stood straight again. "Armand!" He greeted the other man as if he were a long time friend, not a stranger. "So good to see you. Yes, yes. I am Rhys, as you have so wisely guessed!"

Armand grinned even more widely. Truth be told, most people did not greet others with such enthusiasm here. It reminded him of home, of how his friends in both Paris and England had greeted each other. And he still remembered formalities, as he bowed slightly at the waist. "Well, it was a rather easy guess since you are in apparel that does not fit with this era," he said with a slight chuckle. "But we can fix that."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an amulet. "Here. This is the amulet you should wear to keep yourself safe. I would recommend you keep it on at all times, because the Complex is not operational right now, and there are not many places warded against the demons." He thought for a moment. There might be one or two rooms left at the Inn. He knew that rooms had been offered to those displaced but there could still be a place for Rhys. "Why don't we get you into clothing that will not cause people to look at you strangely? Then I can take you to a place where you may rest when you're tired, if there is room there."

"My apparel?" Rhys seemed surprised by this, though as he thought on it, he realized that those few he had seen were dressed differently. Still, he hoped that he could keep the color and style of his familiar wardrobe, even here in this new place. He had never been one for drab clothing.

Taking the offered amulet, Rhys held it up, examining the sigil it bore. At first glance it did not appear to have any power of its own, but... there was something else to it. He wasn't entirely certain. (Not for the first time, he wished that Orne was nearby, to ask these sorts of questions.)

"Thank you, truly," Rhys offered, pocketing the amulet. "I am relieved to have someone here to show me the way of things! Yes, yes. Clothing would be wonderful, I think."

Armand chuckled slightly. "I did not have much say in the clothing I wore when I arrived. My sister was already here, unbeknownst to me, and she is an actress. I was outfitted with clothing from her theatre's wardrobe department, so while I got to chose what I wore there was a smaller selection. I am sure we can find something that suits your taste. The nice thing about this time and place is that there are many places that sell clothing, of all sorts of styles. I believe my girlfriend refers to me as a hipster, for the style in which I dress." He shook his head slightly. "I still don't know what that term means."

He nodded towards the exit to the park, and they began to walk. "I read farther down on your post that you know Princess Addie. She has been most kind to me since I got here. She is a very wonderful woman and a good friend. She must be most happy you are here as well. I know she missed those from where she was from." He paused for a moment, wondering if he should tell him about her being trapped in her apartment. He could warn Rhys without giving details, he decided. "She had a bit of a scare recently. So seeing a familiar and friendly face from home may be just what she needs."

"A theatre! How wonderful!" Rhys seemed excited at the prospect, even mentioned casually that way. He had seen traveling minstrels and actors performing for the King before, so to hear that there was something similar here was a bright spot in the day. "I'm afraid I do not know that term, either."

Falling into step beside Armand, Rhys smiled to himself at the descriptions of Princess Addie. "I am relieved to hear that she has made friends in this world- though it does not surprise me in the least. She is very... bright. I was drawn to her from our very first meeting, many years ago." He was quiet a moment, then added, "What sort of scare?"

"If you like the idea of theatre I definitely think you're going to enjoy cinema. It's almost the same as theatre, but it's filmed on a special device called a camera that saves the moving images and lets you play them on many other devices, such as the computer you are carrying. There's also television, which is the same thing except you watch them on a different type of screen, and the television shows are much shorter, but there are more of them and they tell a continuous story. The technology of this era is truly remarkable." They exited the park and he pointed across the street. "That is called a movie theater. You can sit and watch the films there."

He thought for a moment. "I do not know if you have seen the wreckage of two buildings here in town. Someone destroyed them to hurt us. Addie was at home when it happened. I was not there, so I do not know what happened. But I cannot imagine it was pleasant. You would have to ask her for more details, if she is willing to talk about it."

[OOC: Ignore the last comment! I did something I shouldn't have.]

Rhys listened attentively, nodding at Armand's descriptions of the unfamiliar technology. "I will need to investigate this. I thank you, Armand, for the explanation- truly, it all sounds fascinating."

And then he had gone on about Addie being attacked- or, at least, being caught in the crossfire- and Rhys wondered again why he hadn't been brought to this place sooner. If he had, he could have helped. She might not have been injured at all. "I imagine not, no," he agreed, quietly. "I will speak with her about it, in time. We have much to discuss, she and I."

"It is all a bit confusing at first. There are still pieces of technology I do not understand at all, and many I am still learning to understand. But there are those here who are very attuned with the technology of this era, and they are willing to help guide you through learning how to use it. There are more friendly people here than unfriendly, I have found." He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone and showed it to Rhys. "This allows me to talk to anyone anywhere. It also functions as a miniature computer. It is called a cell phone."

They made it to the main street by the park and walked for a bit until he got an alert that a new message had been posted to the boards. Armand paused for a moment to send a message to Lois, and he got a quick response. "Addie is staying at the same place where I am, the inn run by a woman named Eponine," he said before putting his phone away. "There is still a room available so I have asked that it be reserved for you. As soon as we get you more appropriate clothing I will take you there. Hopefully Addie is there right now and the two of you can have your reunion."

At the appearance of the cell phone, Rhys leaned closer, squinting to examine the new device. He would have asked for it, to hold it himself, to take the time to decipher it for his own use- but that would be rude to his new acquaintance, Rhys knew that much, so he refrained.

"A room! That sounds quite wondrous. I look forward to meeting this Eponine." And to seeing Addie, of course, but that had been discussed already. "Perhaps I can make myself useful, at said inn? I would do to help, in some way."

"I'm sure they would like that," Armand said with a smile. "I am helping them right now with various tasks. With all the extra people there I thought that the least I could do was to help them. They are my friends, after all." His grin faltered slightly. "When I arrived here, I was lucky enough to find my sister and my brother-in-law here. But they were taken back by the Seal recently, so I now have no family here. Eponine and Enjolras were friends because we all come from the same time and place, and they allowed me to stay at the inn because staying at the Complex hurt too much." Then the warmth reasserted itself. "They are wonderful people, very warm and caring. You will like them very much."

They approached one of the clothing shops. Armand shopped there sometimes, and knew they had good quality clothing that was inexpensive. Since all the gift cards were destroyed at the Complex he would need to pay for Rhys's clothing himself, and he could afford the clothing here. "This is a good place to start. Once you are settled we can see about getting you more, but I believe we can get at least three or four outfits here for you. I hope this is to your taste."

"In Bamarre, part of being an apprentice is service to a King- so it would do, I think, to find some sort of task to make myself useful here, as well. Idolatry is not a sorcerer's way!" Orne might even be proud of him, Rhys thought, idly.

Rhys looked at the shop window as they approached, and his smile quickly gave away his excitement. "Oh, how wondrous!" His eyes widened even further- comically so- when they entered the shop. "There's just so much. How many tailors does this town have?" His own clothes had all been hand-made, after all.

The selections were different than what he was used to, yes, but they still fascinated him- and Rhys wasn't afraid to try something new. The trousers were perhaps tighter than those he wore now, and while there seemed to be a lack of brocade (as he favored in his doublets), some shirts were still brightly colored and festively patterned. Rhys couldn't hide his delight.

Armand chuckled. "I can understand well. I do not like being idle myself. i usually try and find things to occupy my time, to the best of my ability. But I am sure they can find some use for you. I think they would be most pleased with the help."

"I believe most clothing here is mass produced from all over the world," Armand said as Rhys looked around. When Rhys began selecting and trying on clothing Armand drifted around the store, looking at things for himself. The combinations Rhys had looked fairly decent, and seemed to suit his personal taste. He gave suggestions when asked, and after some time he thought Rhys might be ready to end his shopping expedition. "Whenever you are ready, I can pay for the clothing," he said after about a half hour.

Truthfully, Rhys could have spent much longer browsing, but he had already taken up much of Armand's time, and he did not want to offend the man who had helped so much. The clothing he had selected was- true to Rhys' form- colorful, but (he hoped) practical.

"I have already thanked you quite a bit," Rhys admitted, as the cashier rrun out their purchases, "I fear the word might not hold much meaning. But- thank you, Armand. I will repay you, as I am able."

"There is no need," Armand said with a smile as the cashier handed him back his change. "You have at least four outfits, so that should be able to get you through at least a few days. And your taste is superb. it will not be hard for you to find more. Enjolras appears to be much the same size as well. He might have clothing you could borrow or have, plus there is whatever we can salvage from the Complex."

He handed Rhys his bags and they exited the store. "Are you at all hungry? The inn has good food, and I am sure Eponine has something prepared for the other customers. It is mostly French cuisine, but the good and hearty kind. Not the pretentious food I encountered at the french restaurant here in town. And I am sure your friend will be nearby so you can have your reunion with her."

Taking the clothes bag in hand, Rhys shook his head at the offer of food. "Sorcerers need not eat, so I do not experience hunger as you do." Of course, if Armand had never met a Bamarrian sorcerer before, he wouldn't know that. "I may eat for pleasure, if I wish, but do not need the sustenance. Still, I would be pleased to accompany you to the inn."

"Then follow me. It is not too long of a trip." He made his way in the general direction of the inn. It would be nice to return there, to go someplace that felt a bit like home. He just hoped that things stayed peaceful for a bit. It was hard enough for anyone to adjust, but harder still when there was chaos. He hoped for everyone's sake things stayed calm for at least a little while.

"So tell me more about yourself," he said as they walked. "I know there are others here who do magic, but I do not know them very well. How exactly does your magic work? And tell me more about your land, if you so wish. Princess Addie has told me some, and it sounds like a very wondrous place." He grinned at him. "It sounds much more peaceful than from where and when I am from."

He hesitated for a moment, not wanting to seem boastful- but also not wanting to deny Armand's request for information. A careful balance between the two, then. "Magic is innate to sorcerers," Rhys offered. "I believe it sustains us, much as air we breathe does. We know who and what we are from the moment we are born- and much of our life is spent in learning. I have only lived among humans for the last four years or so. My apprenticeship to my mentor Orne was for some seventy-eight years prior to that."

Glancing around, it was hard to imagine a place that could be any more unlike Bamarre than this. "It is a lovely land. Wide meadows, beautiful mountain ranges, even the deserts have their own sort of loveliness. We have our own sorts of monsters- specters, gryphons, dragons- but they are ultimately defeatable, when one has the will and bravery to take them on."

Armand's eyes widened slightly. "For a man of eighty-two you look surprisingly young. You look no younger than me, and I am one and twenty," he replied. "You must have longevity that normal men and women do not have. That is actually quite fascinating. If I had not been taken from where I was from I may have lived to see eighty-two, but I would have been old and infirm when I hit that age. You are quite lucky."

He listened to him talk of his land. "You will not find monsters like that ehre, though you will find monsters, of both the demon and human varieties," he said after a moment. "And there are many lovely places all around the world, with beautiful sights to see. I hope one day to return to France and see how my home has changed in the years I have been away. I know there are others who have been displaced who feel much the same way. Hopefully with princess Addie here you will not feel too homesick."

"A sorcerer's flame is extinguished after five-hundred years, presuming they are not killed in some other... nefarious manner. So, to other sorcerer's, I am seen as no older than you. It is a blessing in some ways, but not in others- it can seem, at times, that our lives move almost impossibly slow."

Every land had its own sort of monsters, it seemed, and Rhys wasn't surprised to hear that this place was no different. "What is France like? I have not heard of such a place."

"I can imagine," Armand said thoughtfully. "And there is the added downside that all those you hold dear who do not have an extended lifespan grow old before your eyes, am I correct?" He did not want to imagine a life like that. That was part of the reason he felt so bad for the vampires in this city. To have an eternal lifespan must be hard, if you knew you might have to live alone.

Armand smiled at the mention of his home. "It is a beautiful country, though I will admit I only saw the city of Paris, mostly. In my time it was a very dangerous place to live, but only because there was a revolution going on. And it is not like I understand modern Paris to be. It is a much cleaner and more beautiful place now. The jewel of France." He grinned a little wider. "I also lived in England for a timet, at my brother-in-law Percy's estate. It was much nicer there."

Rhys was quiet for a moment as he considered Armand's words. They were true enough, of course- he had heard his teacher Orne say similar things more times than he could count, now. But it was different, somehow, to hear a similar statement from someone he'd just meant- not someone who was trying to scold him.

"Sorcerers tend to keep to their own kind, for that reason," Rhys offered, rather skirting the question rather than bring up his own particular preferences there.

Of course, he had not heard of the places Armand was mentioning, but the passion in his voice was obvious enough to understand. "It does sound truly wonderful. Are such places too far away from this land, then, that you cannot return?"
