So, in answer to the question that had been rattling in his head, yeah, he fucked up big time. He was single again, which was clearly his own damn fault. Peter was right; he was an idiot. He deserved what he got. He deserved to be alone. He'd acted like a sullen child, not respected Ginger's wishes, and lost out on something good. Why he had ever thought he could change was beyond him. Everyone expected him to be some intergalactic playboy, some guy with a quick line and no depth. No one could really see that he wasn't. At least, he hadn't been for a while.
When he woke up after dying he had tried to go back to that. He'd gone to bars and flirted with pretty women, just like he had before. Went home with two of them. Felt completely dissatisfied the morning after, so he stopped. Oh, he still put up appearances for his friends; as far as those who knew him best new he was still a womanizer. What they didn't know is that he'd pretty much given up on that lifestyle. You don't die and come back exactly the same, he'd realized. Christopher Pike hadn't gotten a second chance. Admiral Marcus hadn't gotten a second chance. Hell, even Khan, who had gotten a second chance...even he didn't get another one. He was in some cryotube locked up somewhere. So he knew anyone lucky enough to get a second chance shouldn't fuck it up. And he had gone and done just that, because he was a fucking idiot.
He sighed. He'd more or less been staying at the Roadhouse since he talked to Jo about keeping the place standing when the fighting started. It wouldn't be that hard to just keep camping out in the bunker. No one knew when Lucifer would strike, after all; if the Roadhouse was going to be a place where people could go then it was smart to be close. He was pretty sure Jo wouldn't mind. But afterwards...he didn't need to stay. He missed home. He'd thought maybe Lawrence could be home, if he never got back to his own time. He'd thought he could actually have a life here. And he did have one, but right now he was fairly sure there were people who would love to have him leave and never darken the streets of this town again. They didn't want him to hurt Ginger, which was why he had been completely respectful when they actually did break up. He didn't want to be on the wrong end of her friends any more than he already was. And he knew Peter would probably be all "I fucking knew he was an idiot" when he left but he didn't care anymore.
So with that in mind, he got his laptop booted up and started looking at stuff in San Francisco. There had been enough of the old city standing that he was sure he'd be able to regain that feeling of being home. After all the fighting was done, provided he survived, he was going to make a home for himself somewhere in this time and place that wasn't Lawrence, Kansas. He could see if someone would do fake paperwork for him so he could work somewhere else. He could be someone other than James Tiberius Kirk for a while, someone who just happened to look and sound like a big Hollywood actor. With his personality, he either stood up and fought, or he ran. There wasn't anything left to fight for in his own personal life, and he didn't really want to make the ultimate sacrifice again if he could help it. Other than Oswin, there wasn't really any reason for him to stay anymore, and she could take care of herself. He wouldn't need to worry about her. So he was going run. It was just going to be easier that way.
But then he sent the text to Oswin and got the really abrupt reply. He remembered she had gotten a note the night before and she had just freaked a bit, then run in the TARDIS and left him there kind of stunned. And as the conversation continued he got more concerned. He was fairly sure something big was going on. And he wasn't lying when he said he would make a scene if she didn't tell him what. Apparently he was really good at making scenes these days. He shut down his computer and stowed it, then got out of the bunker and headed towards the TARDIS. He knocked politely at first, just in case Oswin was nearby and would actually open the door. When he waited a few minutes and didn't get an answer he knocked harder and didn't stop knocking. "Oswin! I wasn't lying when I said I'd make a scene!" he said, figuring that if Oswin herself didn't come out to stop him hopefully someone who knew something would.
