Caroline’s eyes widened at the admission, not having expected that to be the reason at all. Though, maybe if she’d thought on it for awhile, it wouldn’t have been all that surprising. The two had known one another since they were little and always been close. Matt had loved Elena for a long time, and that kind of love didn’t just go away. Some days Caroline was surprised the two had never gotten back together, but with how chaotic their lives were back home maybe that wasn’t too surprising. But there, in Lawrence, there probably had been a chance for the rekindling of that old romance.
Especially since Elena was human.
She waited for the telltale jealousy to spring up inside of her that she would have gotten only a year or so ago at Matt’s feelings. Especially with the likelihood that he’d still been in love with Elena when he’d been dating her, but it never came. All she felt was a sadness for her friend. For him to have opened himself up to the possibility only to have it snatched away all over again.
“Maybe she’ll come back.” It was a futile hope probably, but sometimes, clinging onto hope was important. Sometimes it was all they really had left. “Apparently I was here before a few times and I don’t remember any of it.”
