Any other time, Matt may have cracked a smile at least at her blunt summary of his appearance. He had no doubt he did look like crap. And probably smelled bad, to boot. But he just didn't care right then. He shrugged a little, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand. "I don't know. Pretty sure Jere probably has me beat."
He winced at the thought of Elena's little brother. He hadn't talked to him since they'd gotten fairly wasted together the night Elena had vanished. He was basically a terrible friend. Of course he missed Elena, but he knew it had to be a lot worse for Jeremy. If nothing else, he needed to send him a text and see how he was holding up.
Coming to Lawrence via a Biblical seal had been a shock but it had also felt like a second chance for so many reasons. Vicki and Jeremy were alive. He actually had a shot at attending school -- something he had no chance of considering his poor grades and lack of money. Elena being human. It had felt as near to a clean slate as any of them would probably get and now it was basically gone, wiped out by the same force that had delivered them here.
"Not really, but come in." He stepped aside to let her into his apartment and then shut the door behind her. His limbs and eyelids just felt heavy, like actual weights were on them. Obviously he was still hungover.
