He didn't want to think about Elena turning off her humanity. He was just glad he'd been able to help get her to turn it back on. But he also didn't think she'd been nearly as bad as Katherine. And if he ever heard Stefan say such a thing, he'd probably punch him in the face, vampire or not. Because it was utter crap. Matt was just glad that here, at least, she was human. He wanted to believe she had a shot at a normal life, but frankly he was waiting for the other shoe to drop. There were too many uncontrollable variables in the equation for it not to happen eventually. The Originals all being there, most of their friends from Mystic Falls being there, no Bonnie around to help level the playing field with her magic, Katherine being human, werewolves being in town. It just added up to eventual terrible things -- a repeat or worse of what had already happened. And that was a day he was dreading.
When the oven timer went off, he blinked and looked toward the kitchen as she exited, then he rose to his feet to follow her even before she'd called for assistance. He smiled a little. This? This felt almost normal. Elena baking, hanging out and planning to watch a movie. It was a pleasant, momentary distraction from the reasons he was there.
He headed for the refrigerator without hesitation. "Milk?" he suggested, pulling it open before turning to glance at her. As much as he'd wanted to drink earlier that morning, he already felt somewhat better just being with someone who understood him as well as she did.
