She'd actually surprised him. First the revelation about Katerina when really he'd surprised himself by not immediately thinking about what that could mean for making Hybrids with two of them, not even thinking about revenge. Admittidly, thinking it was a little bit hillarious that it had been Katerina who had been 'cured'. Mostly though he'd thought about Caroline. So angry at the woman for hurting Elena, so much loyalty and passion there. Klaus wanted to see that grow. And if that meant giving up on his revenge then he would do so.
And he wasn't sure at all what had changed or when. How Caroline Forbes had gone from storming away from him in anger to agreeing to come and spend time with him in his home. She wanted to talk about art.
It wasn't the first time she'd been alone with him and it most definitely wasn't the first time he'd had a woman invite herself over. But never before had it been one like her. One that he actually wanted to spend more time with than a quick shag and bite to eat. Rarer still of course, did they leave without being food.
But Caroline, he still wasn't sure how she'd done it, how she made him feel the things she did.
He had spent the time before she got there changing his clothing into his usual more casual look, and then looking through his various paintings here, finding those he was most proud of and the few unfinished that had, to his mind, something missing. He'd brewed coffee, he had wine opened to let it air for later. He was used to being a host. That side of things really did go on autopilot. But he was not used to how she challenged him. Women generally hadn't ever talked back to him, they certainly hadn't outright told him he was wrong and needed to change. She was willful, stubborn, brash. And he loved her for it. Of course her heart still belonged to Tyler Lockwood. Idiot that he was, who didn't know at all what he had.
When the doorbell sounded he did a quick mental check, Elijah was at the university or brooding over Katerina, Kol was...who the hell knew where Kol was, and Rebekah had made herself absent. They would be alone with no scheme binding them, no plan to kill him in the works, much as a spike of paranoia in him had briefly wondered. . And he, the most powerful of their kind, the Original Hybrid, was unsure of himself. It wasn't a feeling he liked.
Still he opened the door to the breathtaking sight of Caroline Forbes.
