“I don’t think we can. Not all by ourselves. We just.” She stared at the box of Cheeze-Its, appetite gone as the helplessness sunk in. “We hang out with her. Let her know we don’t blame her for how everything has turned out. Which she may or may not believe, but if we keep banging it home, maybe it’ll have some weight?”
The rest was up to their friend. As hard as that was to accept, but keeping Elena busy was something Caroline could dive right into. Lists of various activities were already rolling through her head and she mentally broke them down, trying to determine which ones were best based on different categories.
“So we just keep being there for her and if either of us see any drastic differences we let each other know, okay?” It seemed like an okay plan. Not really even a plan, but she was Caroline. She needed to have some kind of action step to proceed to next.
“But how are you? Aside from everything else going on with everyone else, just how are you, Matt Donovan, doing?” Because she needed to know he was okay. He was Matt. He had to be okay. And if he wasn’t then she wanted to help him as well.
