She didn’t see it, not any of it. Elena was the one everyone wanted, that everyone fought over. Whether it was to protect her or love her or anything, it always came back to her best friend. Maybe a small part of Caroline was still jealous over that, but unlike when she’d been human she didn’t let it consume her. She was better than that and Elena had been through more than her share of ridiculous heartache. But none of that mattered, not when Klaus had Caroline so worked up that she wasn’t watching what she was saying. It was really the only reason what she said next even happened. Under normal circumstances she’d never have admitted it.
“Maybe I want to see that you are worthy of--”
Her eyes widened, hand flying to cover her mouth and she took a step back. “That isn’t what I meant.”
Caroline groaned, hands brushing hair out of her face as she whirled around and started putting as much distance between the two of them as she could muster.
