Caroline frowned at what he was saying. She hadn’t thought about all the ramifications of most of her loved ones being human. Somewhere in her mind she’d always known she’d probably watch her mother die. Children were supposed to outlive them. Usually. But seeing Bonnie grow old. Matt. Everyone else who was a friend but wasn’t tied to the supernatural world that she resided in was going to die and there wasn’t a thing she could do about it.
“I haven’t really thought about it that far ahead.” Time may have new meaning for Caroline, but her thought process was still very human in so many ways. She wondered when that would really start to change. When she’d lived more years as a vampire than as a human maybe? “I guess its something I’ll have to eventually figure out.” But not right then.
She wanted to keep feeling glum over what she’d been thinking, but Klaus had kept talking and she perked up at the comments on Eva Peron. She’d actually done a report on the woman once in middle school. Caroline didn’t remember too many details from it, but she did take with her that the woman had been greatly loved. And for a child of divorce, who constantly looked for love in what seemed to be all of the wrong places, that had been a big accomplishment.
Looking away as he talked about Eva’s glow and then her own, she watched as a flock of ducks landed on the small lake. “Is that what I am? One of those bright lights that will sputter out of existence all too quickly so you figure I should take what I can get from the world right now?” Except that didn’t quite jive with the rest of what he was saying and it confused her even more. It seemed like forever since she’d done something that was just for herself. But then again, there was reason for that, wasn’t there? “I can’t, you know? I’m not that selfish girl anymore.”
She didn’t want to be that insecure child anymore. She wasn’t reverting back to it. Though...she kind of doubted that was what he meant anyway, but everything Klaus had wanted for her seemed entirely too good to be true. And why should she--little Caroline Forbes--have all of her dreams come true when so many others wouldn’t?
And he just kept asking the hard questions, ones she didn’t want to answer or think about, but she’d promised honesty and Caroline wasn’t about to hedge her way out of a promise. “Maybe you’re not so bad a person to spend time with sometimes.” It wasn’t exactly her only reason, but she figured it worked as an answer.
