"Probably," Buffy said, sounding weary. "I couldn't find it, anyway." Even if there weren't actually any streetlight runes for that to be true of, it was a true statement. True of so many different things, on so many different levels.
And even though the questions that followed were just questions, Buffy took a step back, perceiving accusation because she felt guilty. "Oh God, Dawn," she said. "I should have remembered...issues about me leaving. I knew that. But it's not really that strange to want to go somewhere else if you hate where you are."
She thought about it for a moment, then added, "It can't make me feel worse." She zipped her pack closed on top of the book, and took an aimless step in the direction she'd been going before she stopped for a reading break. "The only thing that..." She paused, thinking about what she'd been about to say. Then sighed.
