He was planning to come and look at the paintings anyway, on loan from the museum in Kansas City, this was the closest a place like this likely got to culture. But he'd wanted to see it and more than that, upon her arrival in Lawrence, he had wanted very much to show them to Caroline and explain their beauty and their worth. A couple of European expressionist pieces Kirchner's work as he recalled. The form was stunning, the brushwork typical of expressionism but he'd managed to get his own unique little tells in there. It was what Klaus loved about art. He could read the man, dead over half a century just from what he had left behind him for future generations. Or for those who had never left. His life, his history, it was all here for the viewing.
Interesting fellow Kirchner, by no means the inventor of the form but he'd done a lot with it, he'd made it his own and in many ways it told the story of his life, but then most artists work could be said to do that if the viewer knew where to look.
Caroline had known where to look when she'd seen the things he'd painted, it had been one of the many reasons he had been drawn to her so utterly. She told him once, of a piece, that there was something lonely about it and she had been right, he supposed. But then that was life wasn't it, lonely and always fighting for something better. This place, having his family here, having her here. It could be the start of a better life, or so they told him. If only he'd take it and not sabotage it which Rebekah seemed convinced he would do. He supposed he couldn't blame her either. A Street in Berlin It was quite the thing.
And honestly he didn't even know if Caroline would come. Oh it wouldn't be alone. Matt Donovan of all people was going to be with her, because god forbid she be near him alone until she could work out if he was a terrible person undeserving of saving or not. But for now, until she arrived, or didn't as the case may be, he focused on the art.
