His eyes closed instinctively at her soft touch and he couldn't help the small sigh that escaped. He nuzzled into her hand slightly, before taking a step back. He couldn't, shouldn't let himself get so wrapped up in her again. Because what were the odds they'd get to stay here? Slim, weren't they? He'd have to return, yet again, to a place where he couldn't be near her. For her safety, for his, for anyone around her. It was how it had to be. Never mind the thirteen years between them, never mind the fact that he barely had a knut to his name from month to month. Being too close to Tonks could get her killed and he wouldn't risk her life for anything.
Yet he couldn't help return her smile. "I'm all right," he admitted, running his hand through his too long hair. Now that he was in a proper city again, he'd have to get it cut. "Bit surprised at all this, but overall, I'd say I'm doing okay. I'm here with you, aren't I? Harry, Ron, Hermione, they're all here and healthy, if all the wrong ages. Did you see Harry went and had a daughter? I'm not sure how I feel about this."
Deflecting? Yes. She'd see right through it because few knew him like she did, but he had to start somewhere.
