He may have been doubtful, but she had to hope. She had to believe that there was help for him because he couldn't have done all the wonderful things he had for others and still suffer so. It wasn't fair. He'd worked so hard to bring a better world to England. It should have been enough to allow him to be free of the demons of his past. Instead, they'd merely crept up on him again, taking him to a place where she couldn't follow.
"Robin, I'm not asking you to be fair. You shouldn't have to be. Your battle isn't mine. I do understand that, even if..." She hesitated. She knew he hated how she'd been hurt by it all but that wasn't his fault and she needed to make sure he knew that. "Even if I'm not always happy about it. I wish I knew, I wish I could help. But I can't and we both know it." Her hand reached up to lightly brush against his cheek. "I just don't want you to have to hurt."
