Unlike Robin, though, when he asked what was wrong, she'd be honest. She didn't have it in her to lie. Not to him. Not when she was already pulled tighter than she knew how to deal with. The last time she'd been like this was just after her father died and she'd been pulled into so many different directions. After that, the rest seemed to just happen.
She hesitated briefly, sighing. "For about a minute there I thought maybe I was...that we were...expecting." Somehow she couldn't make herself say 'pregnant' in front of him. It sounded final and wonderful and the word everyone would pass around if it was true. But it wasn't.
With a slow, long release of breath, she dropped down to the bed at his side. "I'm not. So you know. I suppose... I mean, the timing isn't right, and all." But God how she'd wanted it. More than she could say.
