"I didn't think there could be any look that would do that," he mused. In reality it was less than a decade since those simpler days. Sure, he'd had other sorts of pressures in his life, being given such responsibility at that age. And yet compared to what he had faced and dealt with since then, now it felt like nothing. And though it was such a short time, he saw himself very differently now. Felt a lot older than he was. Which made him wonder at what she'd said, and if she saw him that way too. He wouldn't blame her for wanting that version of himself back, if he were honest. Not that that was something they particularly needed to explore.
The corner of his mouth lifted in a smile at that kiss, and he glanced up at her as her fingers moved to his shoulders. "Rough around the edges?" His tone held some false incredulity. But then her fingers found a spot in his shoulder and he let his head drop back to rest against her. Entirely unconcerned with pursuing the conversation. It felt equal parts painful and really good.
