She heard the noise of the words, but the sense of them blended into the the noises that surrounded her. Feet against the pavement, motors and tires, people talking -- all equally senseless.
But the closer sense of vampire prickled along her spine... The sun was beating down on her head, but she remembered vampires, specific vampires that she'd fought. The memories were dim, like something viewed through murky water, but she remembered fighting and dust, always dust.
She turned again, not expecting to find anything, just responding as her memories told her to do. Find the vampire. Her eyes were wary, darting here and there, seeing but not understanding. Her hand fumbled for a stake, but she didn't have one secreted away in any of the usual places.
