After a few unsuccessful attempts at magically locating Grace, Regina decided to give her efforts a rest. It wouldn’t help matters at all if she completely exhausted herself. And her magic worked differently here and not having used it for nearly 30 years had left her rusty. Grabbing a piece of stationary, Regina wrote a quick note and left it on the kitchen counter. The Queen had learned from her past mistakes. Leaving without letting her housemates know precisely where she was going would lead to panic. She had only just recently been released from being confined to the house and that was an experience Regina did not want to feel again. It had reminded her of those days where she would do wrong and her mother would use magic to keep her in one place. Her conversation with House days prior had not gone how she had planned. Something that had weighed heavily on her mind for days. Once she had left her note she made her way to the complex. With every intention of actually talking with him. But nothing ever goes according to plan. No sooner had he opened the door and let her in that they found themselves in his bed. As the night hours slipped away, Regina forgot her very reason for wanting to see him, and gave in to the physical pleasure. The following morning she opened her eyes and found House still sleeping. Knowing that she needed to get her head on straight and figure out just what she wanted to say to him she slipped out of bed. Quietly padding across the floor she slipped into her leggings and a simple cotton shirt. The complex’s roof would give her some fresh air and a place to think before returning. And seeing as it was still quite early getting fully dressed in her outfit from the day before could hold off for some time. Once on the roof she sat down and breathed in the fresh air. She had told House that she would stop caring but the problem was it was hard. It wasn’t the romantic sort of caring, or at least Regina assumed that it wasn’t, but she did care about his well-being. True genuine concern was felt for all who held the privilege of being her friend and even family. Maleficent didn’t care who she cursed and that was something that rubbed her the wrong way. Regina wanted to say I told you so to all those who had provoked the witch. She’d spoken with Maleficent twice since the witch had arrived in Lawrence. After their last conversation she had chosen to refrain from provoking her any which way. Her snarky responses were kept to herself. A few of them spoken out loud in her room, the only witness being her slumbering kitten Lys. But people will be idiots and quite a few had taunted her. And now a number nearing half of those displaced were cursed in some form. Up until now she had remained steadfast in her decision to only get involved remotely. Angering the witch so that her loved ones were cursed was not something that she wanted to go through. Not using magic was an ever present struggle but she had been succeeding at overcoming it. Save for when Dark had been around. Though that was a time she was trying to put behind her. Despite her promise to Henry she had offered her magic to see if she was able to break the curses on those cursed. She had even offered to Jefferson to find his daughter. There were those who still saw her as heartless but she did have a heart. And there was a part of her that did feel guilt for what she had done to Jefferson. Since arriving in Lawrence she knew just what it was like to be separated from your child. If she could bring Grace back to him or point him in the direction of where she was being held than she would do it. The consequences would be something that she would deal with when this whole nightmare was over. If her magic could be used for good than it would all be worth it. Everyone else be damned. Shaking her head she took one more glance at the early morning sun and turned to head back inside but stopped short. Her mother was standing off to the side. The mother who had destroyed her life and was capable of destroying so many others. With her body physically shaking she teleported herself back inside the complex and practically ran down the stairs and back into House’s apartment. The door slamming shut behind her. As she paced she began murmuring to herself, “this cannot be happening. She cannot be here,” over and over again. Maleficent was bad news but her mother could be even worse. The woman was evil incarnate. And if the two of them banded together, Lawrence may very well not survive. House had watched people be stupid on the boards for the last several days. It never ceased to amaze him exactly how much stupidity there was in the world. And somehow, more of it seemed to be spread through the displaced population of Lawrence than should have been deemed necessary for one small population. He’d taunted the witch, sure. Once. And the conversation had very quickly fallen rather flat. Maleficent had grown bored and, for whatever reason, didn’t deem him fit to curse. Not that he was complaining. House was never one to want to lose, but this was one situation that he didn’t completely mind it as much. His night had been shaping up to be rather boring at first. Until a certain formerly Evil Queen showed up on his doorstep. Things always got more interesting when she turned up. And that night was absolutely no different. He wasn’t even in the least bit disturbed when she left the bed, didn’t even notice, really, and he would have been damn content to stay there and sleep for another few hours. But Regina had other plans. The door slamming shut was what woke him, but Regina muttering to herself was what got him up. Even from the other room, she seemed frantic, which wasn’t entirely like her. And that made the situation interesting. He took his time getting out of bed, first snatching two Vicodin from the bottle in the drawer of the bedside table next to him. He absently ran a hand over his leg. The pain was always the worst in the morning. Finally, he pulled himself out of bed and stood watching her curiously. “What in the hell did you put in your coffee this morning and can you put it in mine too?” Regina had been thinking of ways in which she could stop her mother before she began ruining lives. It had been something that she had contemplated before after a conversation with Snow. No one, other than Rumpelstiltskin knew her mother as well as she did. If anyone was going to be able to stop her it would have to be either of them. And with Rumpelstiltskin needing to protect Belle it all fell on her. She couldn’t let anyone else be hurt because of her mother’s cruelty. When she heard herself being spoken to she was pulled out of her thoughts. Regina turned and screamed. “What have you done!?” It didn’t even dawn on her what had been said only that the person standing in front of her was her mother. Her mother was standing inside Gregory House’s apartment and that could not be a good thing. The evil manipulative woman had killed her true love years ago. And there was no doubt in her mind that she would hurt any man that entered her life that couldn’t give her power. It was always about power. Not hearing anything from House her mind immediately went to the idea that he was dead or being held captive somewhere. Regina hadn’t been on the roof all that long but it could have been long enough for her mother to have spirited him away. It would be just like her. She had fun with House, much like she did with Galen, her mother had never been pleased at her having any sort of fun. It wasn’t behavior befitting a queen. “Where is he mother!? Why must you ruin my life time and time again!?” Regina said as she wrapped her arms around her body. Though she was hugging herself in a defensive position she would readily use magic to defend herself. She wasn’t the innocent and naive little girl anymore. The girl who took the abuse because of the love that she felt for her mother. No that girl was long gone. Regina still cared about her mother but she would kill her if it meant protecting all of those that she cared about. House arched an eyebrow at the emphatic question that she spouted off at him. “I woke up. If it’s really that much of a problem, I could probably still manage to go crash again for another couple of hours.” The suggestion was a joke, mostly, but he was trying to figure out why Regina was acting so strange. “Mother?” he mouthed, frowning, glancing around the apartment. “Regina? Nobody else is here.” Hallucinations. Not good. The number of causes for them was ridiculous, at least some of which he could automatically rule out because she’d been in his sight for the majority of the last eight hours or so. That was only a few, though, and still left him at square one. A look of disbelief came across her face as he spoke. “Stop! You are a damn liar Mother and you know it.” Regina said as she dropped her arms to her side. “What did you do? Turn up when Maleficent did? And just keep tabs on my comings and goings? Chose to strike the minute my guard was down?” Walking towards who she assumed to be her mother the tell tale signs of her magic getting ready to explode made the air heavy. “I will not let you ruin any lives. Not this time! You will not take someone else from me! If you tell me where Greg is, I will let you live.” “No I - okay, well, I will admit I am a liar, do it all the time, but for once, in this instance? I’m not. Which is probably hard to believe, but its true.” Reasoning with someone who was, in every way that counted, in the middle of an elaborate delusion was not an easy thing to do and was certainly not the way he had intended on starting his day. He watched her carefully as she approached him, not all that sure of what she might do. Schizophrenics were completely unpredictable and as far as he was concerned, so was Regina right now. “As hard as this is going to be for you to believe, “I am Greg.” A scoff and then an almost sinister laugh was heard coming from her mouth. “Do you take me for that much of a fool? I’m not naive mother. I know that you are capable of taking the form of anyone you choose. So, I will not listen to your lies!” When it came to her mother Regina was at her most irrational. There was so much pain buried deep inside and few got to see glimpses of it. “No, actually, you’re one of the only people around here I actually don’t think is a complete moron.” He paused and pointed at her, “Tell anyone I ever said that and I’ll deny it to the death.” “Look, my lies don’t generally belong in the realm of attempted identity theft, okay? They’re more like, ’Yes, I take the prescribed number of Vicodin I need and never any more’ or ’Sure, I’ll take extra clinic hours’. Identity theft is far too much trouble to go to for someone as lazy as me.” he explained in somewhat of a rambling detail. That stopped her from ranting. Her mother actually didn’t see her as a complete moron. It was only a small spark of doubt but in the end the hallucination kept its hold. The suspicion was back in full force. This sickly sweet routine was similar to the one on the show. Only she wouldn’t be fooled by it. “Honestly mother, quit now. I’m tired of listening to you prattle on.” Though her emotional barriers were down, Regina’s guard was firmly in place. Still ready to strike at any moment. “If you think I’m going to believe that you are him then you are an idiot. I was on the roof for quite awhile. You could have tortured him into speaking so you’d be able to trick me. Now, tell me what you’ve done with Gregory House now god dammit.” Rarely did Regina lose her cool these days. She had always been the collected and feared evil queen in the enchanted forest. And the feared mayor in storybrooke. But her mother had done enough to cause that facade to crack. With no sight of House in the apartment she was fastly approaching the point where she’d use magic against her. And at that point god help anyone who got in the way. House groaned at that response. She still didn’t understand. How was he supposed to prove this to her? He was most certainly not who she thought he was, but dealing with the delusional was not exactly his forte. The diseased, sure. And the delusional were certainly interesting, but they were not his usual crowd. “I haven’t done anything with him. Because I am him and I’d hardly do anything insane to myself that wouldn’t somehow benefit me.” He had two options. Prove to her that he was himself or play along with the delusion. The first option seemed to be the best route, though, considering the issues that Regina seemed to have with her mother. And the fact that he knew nothing about her mother was definitely a deciding factor against playing along. “Ask me something only he would know, then.” Regina was not convinced. Her mother was an evil manipulative bitch and could easily masquerade as someone. She’d seen it first hand on the show. There was nothing that could convince her otherwise. While the words were most definitely something that Greg might say, Regina still wasn’t convinced. Cora had always taken action and manipulated others when it was to benefit herself. The past was clouding her from seeing the absolute truth. “It’s always about what can benefit you mother. No regard for anyone else. Killing Daniel so that I could marry the King and become Queen. Fuck my happiness so long as you received what you wanted.” Her brow raised. The smallest amount of rational thought seeping through again. If her mother was going to insist on this she would at the very least humor her. It may bring her one step closer to finding out where Gregory House was. “All right, mother. I’ll play along with your little game. A few months ago something happened to me. What was it? Explain in the fullest detail,” Regina asked the question knowing she’d not receive an answer. If her mother had been around that long she’d have known before now. She figured roughly around when Dark began creating mischief the Seal must have brought her in and in true Cora fashion she had bided her time until the proper moment arose. “Great. Your mother and I have something in common.” he rolled his eyes. How on earth he could have that kind of luck, House wasn’t sure, but there it was, furthering the falsehood she was quickly becoming ensnared in. This was getting increasingly more annoying as time ticked by. He had to think for a moment, to figure out exactly what she was referring to. But it only took a moment for him to remember. “The demon attack?” he arched an eyebrow. “I .. didn’t exactly get full-blown details. But the attack was ridiculous. And you died. There’s only so much to tell, there.” Perhaps because you are you, mother. Was the response on the tip of Regina’s tongue but she was unable to utter it. The response having stopped all movement and ability to speak. Her mother couldn’t have known about the attack and her death. She would have felt her presence if she had been in Lawrence since then. Which is why she had surmised it had been when Dark reentered town. Then it dawned on her. Her mother must have taken House’s heart and cast some spell to see everything that had happened. She wasn’t sure how but it was the only answer. And no matter what question she asked the right answer would always be given. “Hand over his heart mother and tell me where he is.” Had she been in her right mind, Regina would have taken notice of House’s mannerisms. But due to all the hurt she had suffered it was hard to see past the image of her mother that Maleficent’s curse had created. House stared at her, the look in his face nothing less than incredulous. There was no fucking way she’d just logic’d some way around this, to convince herself, yet again, that this was her mother standing in front of her. “I can’t win with you.” he shook his head, one hand reaching up to pinch the bridge of his nose. “It is way too early in the morning for this, Regina. I have not had enough coffee and vicodin to deal with delusions and the delusional. Can we just agree to disagree and go on about the day like normal until whatever new Lawrence-related stupidity and insanity it is you’re being affected by rolls by?” Regina rolled her eyes and walked forward until she was standing right in front of him. With her finger pointed in his direction she said, “I’m through with reasoning with you, mother. I don’t give a damn how early in the morning it is. I’ll find him my damn self if I have to and then I will deal with you.” With that said she pushed past him to go and pick up the articles of her clothing that were still strewn across his floor. Tears of anger were pricking at the corner of her eyes. She was angry that she had let her guard down long enough that her mother could have done something to him. Pulling her shirt over her head she grabbed her bra and slipped it on before pulling her shirt back over her head and reaching down to grab her jacket. It would have been just as easy to magic her remaining clothes on her but she wasn't in the right emotional state to do that. House let out a groan of frustration as she brushed past him to get her clothes. Was this really happening? Or had he had one too many Vicodin and started hallucinating himself? Although, why the hell he would hallucinate Regina seeing him as her mother … No, this definitely had to be something that was specific to Lawrence. it was her, which was kind of useful in the fact that he didn’t actually have to accept blame or take responsibility to any of it. Except now she seemed pretty hell-bent on … something and maybe he should stop her before she went on some crazy witch hunt for her mother. Especially considering she thought he was her mother for some reason. “There’s got to be a way to prove this to you,” He said, leaning in the doorway, watching her. “Or. Alternatively. Coffee.” Why the hell she would even agree to it to begin with, given the circumstances, but he had an idea. “Can’t go on some big search without coffee first.” He just hoped she would take the bait. With her jacket in hand she planned to head on out and begin searching for him. If it was the last thing that she did, Regina would find him, and make her mother pay if she had harmed him. It didn’t matter how much she still cared for her mother. There were just some things that she could not let go this time around. However, those immediate plans of leaving the apartment were pushed aside when coffee was mentioned. It wasn’t the fact that she needed caffeine. The adrenaline pumping through her veins keeping her moving so caffeine was unneeded. It was that her mother who had never lifted her own finger to do anything since she had been born was talking about coffee. Something that hadn’t existed in the enchanted forest but she could have very well learned about once the Seal had brought her through. And it almost seemed as if she was going to be the one making it. All at once Regina’s suspicions grew and she was determined to stay. The change in tactic was something that did not sit well in the pit of her stomach. Tossing her jacket on the bed she said, “All right, mother. But you’re making the coffee and staying within my sights because I don’t trust you. You can do that can’t you? There aren’t any servants here that you can order around.” Once she figured out what her mother’s aim was, Regina was going to slip out and fin House. The longer she put it off the more danger he could be in. “Yeah, I can do that.” he said, eyeing her for a moment. She was going to be watching him like a hawk. This would be tricky, but House wouldn’t be himself if he ran away from a challenge. He made his way into the kitchen, going about making the coffee. He had sleep aids in the cabinet, but getting them without her seeing was hardly possible. However, she couldn’t see the labels. He had stashes of Vicodin almost everywhere in the apartment. He could play that off, easily. Just a matter of sleight of hand. He opened the cabinet and grabbed the pill bottle, knocking two of them out into his hand, replaced the bottle and acted like he’d popped them in his mouth. When the coffee was done, he got two mugs down. “Get the sugar out of that cabinet, there, for me.” he said, pointing in the general direction. While she was busy with that, he slipped the pills into one of the cups. God, he hoped this worked. Fast. Stalling her while they took effect would be the real trick. Regina followed into the kitchen not letting her mother move too far from her line of sight. She did not trust the woman to not be up to something and watching her like a hawk was the best option. Her eyebrow raised as she effortlessly moved about the kitchen preparing the coffee. The anger and suspicion bubbling up inside of her. As well as the questioning. How long had her mother been inside Greg’s apartment to know precisely where everything was kept. When she was asked to get the sugar she levelled a glare in her direction. “I’m not your servant Mother or have you forgotten that quickly that I was made Queen. Making my station above yours.” It was said full of the anger that she felt inside for everything in the past. But nonetheless Regina moved to the cabinet and grabbed the sugar. As she made her way back she eyed her mother trying to determine if she had done anything. Placing the sugar on the counter she concluded that she couldn’t possibly have done anything and so she waited for the cup of coffee to be handed over to her. With her body leaning against the counter she raised her eyebrow and asked one of the questions going through her mind. “Just how long were you in this apartment mother? You knew where everything was and please spare me having to hear you convince me that you are in fact Greg. I won’t believe you no matter how often you say it.” He seemed to pass the test and get by without her noticing what he’d done. At least that much had been accomplished. Now for the trickier part. Distracting. Here’s hoping that he could manage to keep her talking. He finished preparing the coffee and offered one of the mugs to her. He was banking on the distrust she had in her mother to make her choose the opposite mug. If this failed, he may be screwed. At that next comment, House decided that at this point, playing into the delusion was probably the best way to go. Except he had to be careful. Still had to keep her here long enough for the sleeping pills to work enough through her system. “I’ve been watching.” he said simply, eyeing her, trying to gauge her reaction. Regina gave her mother a look that said everything. It had been something she had assumed earlier on when she first saw her mother. Had even accused her of doing just that. It wasn’t in fact an actual answer to her question. Unless her mother had been watching House and following his every movements. Then that would make it in fact an actual answer and raised her suspicions even more. As the mug was offered up to her, Regina stared at the mug and then reached across grabbing the other one. Though she had concluded that her mother couldn’t possibly have done anything there was still a chance that it had escaped her notice. Her mother had been practicing magic longer than she had and was potentially more powerful. “Nice try mother but I’m not idiotic enough to take a mug offered to me.” Taking a sip she quickly added, “Not terrible. At least you’ve learned something,” and then kept sipping on the beverage. Her mother hadn’t given away anything that could explain where Gregory House was and if by the time she finished the coffee in her hand she hadn’t learned anything she was leaving. Hopefully he wasn’t far as she wasn’t entirely dressed for hiking all around Lawrence. He hid any look or cue that could have tipped her off, but he was glad she took the right mug. All of this would have fallen apart if she hadn’t. He sipped at his own coffee, watching her for a moment. “Well, we all learn something eventually, don’t we?” House suddenly found himself regretting not doing any digging on Regina, especially given how easy it would be to do so considering the fictional aspect of both of their lives. Perhaps he should make a note to do so after all this was over, just in case something like this happened again. Regina stifled a small laugh. Her mother was up to something. Something that wasn't just taking Greg and depositing him somewhere. Knowing her mother whatever she was up to was the kind of something Lawrence did not need. Especially with Maleficent still around. The facade of being nice right now was to trick her into a false sense of security or something. With her eyes trained on her mother, Regina continued sipping at her coffee until there was the smallest amount left. Sitting the cup down she pointedly said, "All right, mother. Times up. I'm going to fi-" but her words stopped short. Her body suddenly felt lethargic and oh so heavy. Gripping the counter she faintly growled out "what have you done?" In her stupidity she had played right into her mothers hand. Something had been placed in the mug she had chosen. Her mother must have been relying on the fact she wouldn't take what was offered to her. As her eyes grew heavier a tear gathered in the corner of her eye. |
