Who: Elena Gilbert and Elijah Mikaelson
What: Feels Goddamn feels. Clearly she wasn't bothered by the disappearing wishes enough so give her feels
When: Middle of the night so 28 into 29 November
Where: The House of Misfit Toys? House Called Neverland?
Warnings: F for Feels?

It was one of the things that she knew could happen but never counted on it happening. She should have realized though, after the Seal brought Glinda back, one of the things Elphie had always worried about because of what was in Glinda's future. What she would return knowing, or not knowing but then learning. Elena hadn't had to worry about that bit. She and Anakin were from different worlds, but he'd gone back to being dead and Elena had never been known for handling death well even with it so prevalent in her life. Though perhaps that was the cause of it. People kept dying on her, leaving her, so she grasped desperately to those around her in fear of losing them as well. But then they died. Or were hurt. She had meant it when she told Anatoly it might be better if Anakin were no longer there, so he couldn't be ruined by her as well. And what did she do? She brought him back to Elphie's house. Reflex. It was closer to where he had been. That, and she could still remember how picky an eater he was in terms of Earth food and that she still could make it.

God she was an idiot.

There was so much that needed to be said. Not about them, though. No. Anakin didn't remember and it wasn't her place to make things worse. So Elena would do what she always did. Help those in need. Get them somewhere safe and even though she could have taken him to the Complex, well, Elphie's was safe as well. And his room was still there. But Tahiri? Jacen? Those were things she couldn't explain. They weren't in her place and it should be left to Jacen. Or his family. Someone who wasn't her. But she doubted Jacen would make her tell him about that.

The fact remained though, Elena was at a loss. It had started with the ghosts. Alaric. He had made all those walls of self denial crumble down. The self denial that she wasn't fine from returning. From the pile of deaths that seemed to follow her, the pain because of her blood, what happened to everyone who got close to her. It hadn't been so bad in Lawrence, it wasn't focused on her... and when Lawrence was the better alternative? She should have realized that there was something seriously wrong then. But she had focused on what she knew, how to help those from home should an Original show up and they needed to dispatch of them. And then Elijah had shown up. And while he was indeed an original, he wasn't a threat. At least not right now. Things hadn't gotten very far in that particular endeavor.

The walls had started coming back up, Elena throwing herself into school work. Because it was easier to do than face the pain. Tahiri showing up had started the downward spiral to the point of Anatoly kidnapping her for a night of mini Russian therapy. She'd been fine, or so she had claimed. He saw in her though that she hadn't been. But Elena had done what she always did. Help. She didn't let the petty antics that had come into play for others happen with her. She couldn't be that person. It had hurt but she had locked herself away. Focused on her friends and had been fine. Only not.

When everything had happened, the loss of wishes and magic, it hadn't really bothered Elena. She was so used to insanity and one crisis after another, she hadn't batted an eye. So with it obvious that this was Lucifer related to try and throw people, what better way than to throw the one curve ball at Elena she couldn't handle? Her feelings. Feelings she couldn't handle because they would consume her. She grasped and struggled but the fact that Anakin couldn't remember hurt. It shouldn't because it was always possible and happened more times than not, but he didn't and Elena didn't know what to do.

It wasn't as if she spent her nights sleeping anyway. Ever since Anakin had gone, and especially after Alaric's ghost, Elena had barely been sleeping. So it wasn't so uncommon that she wasn't sleeping. Again. Right now she was in the kitchen making tea. She used to bake to avoid. But she hadn't baked in three months. Hadn't felt the need to. Hadn't considered it. Even now with her emotions trying to overwhelm her, she couldn't. And for that moment, she was thankful Anakin didn't have the Force presently. If he did, maybe he might remember, but if not, he wouldn't understand and she couldn't explain it.

Jumping as the tea kettle whistle blew, Elena shook her head and poured the water into the mug, watching the tea steep. She had to find a way to rebuild her walls, though. It was the only way she could survive lest everything crush her now that she was too open to the emotions that she tried to ignore in her need to just be normal.

It had been a very long time since Elijah had needed to deal with anything... human. The sensations had mostly been memories so distant that they had happened to someone entirely different. So many betrayals, so long with more power at his fingertips than the universe rightly believed he deserved. And yet he existed, almost happily in his own way. But this, the sensation of breathing, the strange warmth and weakness that accompanied it.

Elijah was not quite sure how to go about sleeping. Most of what he knew of human behavior was based off of mimicking it for the benefit of others, for the illusion of humanity. Though here there seemed little need for it. Making his way down to avoid dreaming, which he found to be usually unpleasant, he saw Elena yet again up.

The plan had been to double check all the defenses, perhaps work on them some more. He was learning quite a bit from Elphie on protection through this exercise.

Taking his own mug from one of the cabinets, he poured his own cup. "I'm glad to see you returned secure." he commented lightly.

Hearing Elijah's voice, Elena blinked and looked over her shoulder, before giving a slight nod. Part of her was concerned by his keeping of his tendencies from being a vampire as the human body did require sleep, but it was also Elijah. That, and Elena was fairly certain that no one in the house kept regular sleeping habits. Goodness knew she didn't. Kal didn't and had been in search of a way to not need sleep, Elphie didn't usually and Anakin well.... He was Anakin and Elena didn't know how to handle that just yet.

"Well, it is not as if Rose would just let something happen to me."

Typical. But it was good, especially in the present atmosphere of Lawrence where a simple walk could end up with someone dead. The schools were closed, so Elena didn't have to worry about Jeremy going out in that. It was why she couldn't just leave Anakin out there. He didn't have the Force. It would be too dangerous as he learned to figure things out without it. He didn't have the memories of the week or so where she had his abilities and he had been a regular human.

Letting her tea steep, Elena leaned against the counter, her gaze flickering to the cabinet of unused bakingware. Part of her wondered if it would jar Anakin's memory if she were to attempt it. But he wasn't down in the kitchen right now, so she would put that thought aside for later.

"So, couldn't sleep because you're still figuring out the human thing or just didn't want to?"

Because it was Elena. Why would she focus on the things upsetting her? Given her lack of sleep, it seemed she tended to talk to Elijah a lot in the dead of night when there was no one else up. So while in the end it might come up, she would still focus on something else. Besides, she was being ridiculously human to him she imagined, never mind the fact she was human. Sometimes things like that were forgotten in the chaos of Mystic Falls and Lawrence.

"There would have been words if that was not the case." he replied lightly, focusing on fixing his tea for the moment. Elena knew more about this world than he did, as did this Rose person. It was not a situation that left him particularly pleased, despite his attempts to compensate. This forced transition was simply another example of his own lack of understanding in this place.

Raising an eyebrow, Elijah looked back at her for a long moment. Tired, worn, and this new addition to the house had her on edge in some way. He might not be able to hear her heartbeat, to have all the indicators as a vampire. But Elijah had spent a millennium attempting to learn to read people. Something more was going on.

"You were awake." he said simply as a matter of an answer. And it was accurate enough. The two of them were always up at this time. It simply was part of the routine he was carving out for himself in this world.

Rolling her eyes some, Elena just shook her head, uncertain on if she should be amused by the comment or not. Because Rose wasn't the type who just took things lying down but she also would have done everything in her power to keep Elena safe just as Elena would do for her. And then the whole notion of not putting herself at risk when there was someone in danger, especially if it was someone she was close to.

"Somehow, I'm not surprised by that."

Sipping her tea, Elena didn't even flinch as Elijah looked at her to read her body language. She was used to such things from a lot of people. And really, she was too tired to put on a complete act. There was no need for it, no one to protect, no deals to renegotiate. It was just Elena trying to be herself and be fine despite the fact she really wasn't.

"So I was. But given you're presently human, most people would be asleep by now."

Most. But perhaps not the people who had too much on their mind, who always had too much on their mind as was the case with Elena it seemed. Though the routine was forming so perhaps she wasn't so surprised. Sometimes the easiest way to deal with things that happened in Lawrence was to form a routine, something familiar. If staying up for late night talks on everything under the sun while Elena tried to fill Elijah in on everything was part of it, so be it.

That was the trouble with Lawrence, though. Sometimes, it just had to be experienced first hand to truly grasp what was going on. And this was the first major instance of something happening that Elijah had been present for. Different time lines for the people brought through was just the Seal, but in terms of craziness? Nothing had really happened since the ghosts back in September.
