It was one of the things that she knew could happen but never counted on it happening. She should have realized though, after the Seal brought Glinda back, one of the things Elphie had always worried about because of what was in Glinda's future. What she would return knowing, or not knowing but then learning. Elena hadn't had to worry about that bit. She and Anakin were from different worlds, but he'd gone back to being dead and Elena had never been known for handling death well even with it so prevalent in her life. Though perhaps that was the cause of it. People kept dying on her, leaving her, so she grasped desperately to those around her in fear of losing them as well. But then they died. Or were hurt. She had meant it when she told Anatoly it might be better if Anakin were no longer there, so he couldn't be ruined by her as well. And what did she do? She brought him back to Elphie's house. Reflex. It was closer to where he had been. That, and she could still remember how picky an eater he was in terms of Earth food and that she still could make it.
God she was an idiot.
There was so much that needed to be said. Not about them, though. No. Anakin didn't remember and it wasn't her place to make things worse. So Elena would do what she always did. Help those in need. Get them somewhere safe and even though she could have taken him to the Complex, well, Elphie's was safe as well. And his room was still there. But Tahiri? Jacen? Those were things she couldn't explain. They weren't in her place and it should be left to Jacen. Or his family. Someone who wasn't her. But she doubted Jacen would make her tell him about that.
The fact remained though, Elena was at a loss. It had started with the ghosts. Alaric. He had made all those walls of self denial crumble down. The self denial that she wasn't fine from returning. From the pile of deaths that seemed to follow her, the pain because of her blood, what happened to everyone who got close to her. It hadn't been so bad in Lawrence, it wasn't focused on her... and when Lawrence was the better alternative? She should have realized that there was something seriously wrong then. But she had focused on what she knew, how to help those from home should an Original show up and they needed to dispatch of them. And then Elijah had shown up. And while he was indeed an original, he wasn't a threat. At least not right now. Things hadn't gotten very far in that particular endeavor.
The walls had started coming back up, Elena throwing herself into school work. Because it was easier to do than face the pain. Tahiri showing up had started the downward spiral to the point of Anatoly kidnapping her for a night of mini Russian therapy. She'd been fine, or so she had claimed. He saw in her though that she hadn't been. But Elena had done what she always did. Help. She didn't let the petty antics that had come into play for others happen with her. She couldn't be that person. It had hurt but she had locked herself away. Focused on her friends and had been fine. Only not.
When everything had happened, the loss of wishes and magic, it hadn't really bothered Elena. She was so used to insanity and one crisis after another, she hadn't batted an eye. So with it obvious that this was Lucifer related to try and throw people, what better way than to throw the one curve ball at Elena she couldn't handle? Her feelings. Feelings she couldn't handle because they would consume her. She grasped and struggled but the fact that Anakin couldn't remember hurt. It shouldn't because it was always possible and happened more times than not, but he didn't and Elena didn't know what to do.
It wasn't as if she spent her nights sleeping anyway. Ever since Anakin had gone, and especially after Alaric's ghost, Elena had barely been sleeping. So it wasn't so uncommon that she wasn't sleeping. Again. Right now she was in the kitchen making tea. She used to bake to avoid. But she hadn't baked in three months. Hadn't felt the need to. Hadn't considered it. Even now with her emotions trying to overwhelm her, she couldn't. And for that moment, she was thankful Anakin didn't have the Force presently. If he did, maybe he might remember, but if not, he wouldn't understand and she couldn't explain it.
Jumping as the tea kettle whistle blew, Elena shook her head and poured the water into the mug, watching the tea steep. She had to find a way to rebuild her walls, though. It was the only way she could survive lest everything crush her now that she was too open to the emotions that she tried to ignore in her need to just be normal.
