WHO: Kimberly and Shaina
WHAT: Long overdue and catching up.
WHERE: Kimberly's apartment.
WHEN: Sunday afternoon
RATING: R for language and mention of violent deaths
STATUS: Narrative, complete
It was weird waking up with Shaina in her bed with her the way they used to sleep when they were in high school having slumber parties. Always Shaina got the bed and the other girls camped out on the floor with sleeping bags and pillows. Even post-death, both of them fought over the covers in their sleep and kicked each other with frustration when they realized they were cold and the covers had been stolen. It was just as strange, but in the best kind of way, having her best friend around again, even if no one else could see her or hear her. ...well, Lois had sort of "heard" her, when Shaina stole Kimberly's phone while she had been talking to Lois and had texted asking to share freakin' Clark Kent.
Shaina lounged on the bed Songpopping all of Kimberly's contacts and occasionally making a dirty comment about Connor as Kimberly chatted with him online. Really, with the exception of the fact that there was still blood in Shaina's hair and the ends were charred from the explosion, it almost felt...normal. Like everything was the way it was supposed to be. Her real other half was with her again and Kimberly felt complete again for the first time since she'd gotten the vision of the pile up all those years ago.
"I suck at this game," Shaina complained, tossing Kimberly's phone aside. Zeus whimpered and hid under the desk at which Kimberly was sitting. He hadn't taken Shaina's presence as well as Kimberly had. "Why does your stupid dog hate me?"
"Because, Shaina, he can't see you or hear you, he just knows something's not right," Kimberly sighed. "And you suck because you don't know any of Today's Hits," she added with a smirk.
Shaina rolled onto her stomach and looked back at Kimberly with her eyebrows raised. "Did it hurt?" she asked curiously. "The wood chipper?"
Looking down, Kimberly frowned. "...yeah," she admitted. "Did the wreck hurt?"
"Frankie, maybe," Shaina said with a facial shrug. "Dano and I died pretty much instantaneously. Stop stressing it, Kimmy; how many times do I gotta tell ya? It's not your fault. Shit happens, sweetie."
Sighing, Kimberly turned in her chair to face her friend and crossed her arms over the back of it, resting her chin on her forearm. "Do you see them? Frankie and Dano?" she asked. "Do they feel the same way?"
"Yeah, all the time, we're blowin' it up in Heaven, Kimmy, you know us," she laughed. "Sometimes I think the Powers That Be question their judgement call on us," she added with a mischievous smirk. "They miss you. Especially Dano. He tried to interfere, you know..." she pointed out and Kimberly raised her eyebrows in question. "When you died. Both times. He managed it with the drowning, actually. Frankie was so pissed off, because we thought we were finally gonna see you again and he's stupid. But your friend, Officer Hottie or whatever, couldn't break the glass. So Dano did. But he couldn't get the wood chipper to shut off in time. ...I hate to admit that Frankie and I were kind of glad, but then you never fucking showed up, you cheater," she pointed out, making a vague gesture around the room. "Came here instead. That's so crap."
The fact that her friends had been fighting over whether or not her dying would've been in their favor was a little uncomfortable, but she understood and appreciate the sentiment. "Sorry?" Kimberly asked more than apologized, giving a sheepish grin.
Shaina laughed and the sound of it was like music to Kimberly's ears, even if Zeus howled his protest and whined a bit more at Kimberly's feet. It was a sound that Kimberly missed. She wished her other friends could meet Shaina; they'd like her, Kimberly knew they would. Lois especially would. And Penny. Jess before she'd been pregnant maybe, but she was changing. It wasn't that Kimberly felt any less close to Jess, or that she liked her Lawrence bestie any less for it but they were different people now. Jess was starting a family while Kimberly was traveling the world.
"Shut up, stupid mutt," Shaina groaned, throwing a pillow at the dog who yipped and scrambled out from under the desk to hide in the bathroom.
Kimberly gave her friend a reproachful look. "That was mean," she pointed out.
"So? He's a dog."
"So, he's my dog and he makes me feel safe here," Kimberly countered.
Shaina rolled her eyes and made a face. "Whatever, he's a dog. I can protect you."
"Until someone throws salt at you," Kimberly replied pointedly.
"Whatever," Shaina said, shaking her head. She sat up and looked over Kimberly's shoulder. "Still talking to the British one?" she asked with interest. "What's complicated about it, anyway? He's hot, you're hot, his new girlfriend, you know, isn't so...what's to understand, Kim? I mean, your new boy toy is way hotter, don't get me wrong, but...what happened?"
Kimberly heaved a sigh and got up out of the chair, moving over to the bed and dropping backward down onto it, staring up at the ceiling. "This place is fucked up," Kimberly prefaced.
Shaina laughed. "Yeah, no shit, Sherlock," she replied. "I'm here. You're here. We're both dead but you're also kind of not. I got that much out of it."
"First of all...Sherlock is here," Kimberly laughed, "so don't use that reference. And second, it does...weird stuff. Like, I think this is actually the least weird thing that has happened here. Connor and I..." she started, trailing off and frowning slightly. "There was a few weeks, or maybe a month, where the Seal dropped in a bunch of kids from the future or whatever. And one of them, like, was ours," she said. Lifting her head and turning onto her side, propping her head up with one hand, elbow resting on the mattress, Kimberly looked back at her friend. "She was beautiful, Shaina. You should've seen her. I could show you pictures, on the internet. And she was so smart, just like Connor."
"And sassy like you?" Shaina predicted.
Kimberly nodded and went on. "She didn't know me, though. She said I died when she was a baby...I think I died having her. Three strikes, you're out, I guess, you know? But after she left, Connor and I just...didn't really know how to process all that, you know what I mean? And we stopped talking to each other as much. ...and then we started avoiding each other entirely. And then he finally had the balls to call us out on it and he broke up with me. One of us had to, ya know, because I wasn't going to and what was the point? We couldn't even look at each other. Somewhere in the future, he fucked me, I got pregnant, and nine months later, I ceased to be. That's...a lot of strain on a new relationship, Shaina."
For a moment, Shaina looked back at her friend sympathetically. "You'd be an awesome mom," she said.
A bittersweet smile crossed Kimberly's face. "Thanks. Guess I'll never know, really. Only, Mini-Pete, whatever his name ends up being, will probably be the closest I'll ever get," she added.
"Oh, are you tight with the pregnant girl?" Shaina asked, eager to grab onto a slightly different subject that might cheer her friend up a little.
"Jess? Yeah, she's one of my best friends," Kimberly replied. "We kind of bonded by accident, actually...but that's another long story I don't feel like telling. But yeah, we're tight. Speaking of which, shit, I need to plan her baby shower soon...she's due in, like, December. I'm cutting it kinda close here..."
Shaina smirked. "You. Planning a baby shower? You're joking, right?"
"Shut up, I can do it!" Kimberly asserted. "How hard can it be?"
For a moment, Shaina was quiet, gnawing on her bottom lip to keep from laughing. She noticed the dog had made his way back out of his hiding spot and was headed toward the door with his tail between his legs. "Think he's gotta pee, babes," she whispered, nodding at Zeus.
Kimberly looked over her shoulder and then sat up straight. "Yeah...come with me? I'd feel better if I wasn't alone."
"I kinda count as you being alone, Kim," Shaina said softly.
"Yeah but not really," Kimberly pointed out. "You can keep me safe, you said yourself."
Letting out a sigh, Shaina climbed off the bed. "Yeah, okay, good point. Let's go. And when we get back, I'm making you post that video I took of him freaking out at me. I wanna see who else responds...you have really pretty friends. Like, everybody here is crazy attractive. Maybe you really are dead and you get a special Heaven for freaks or something," she teased.
Kimberly rolled her eyes and laughed. "Not happening. And shut up. Let's go."
