She obviously didn't know what she was asking of him. Or perhaps she just didn't know him as well as she thought she did. Because she seemed to be asking him not to love her. And that was impossible. Truly impossible. He shook his head at the thought. "So you're wanting things as they were, wanting as it used to be between us. If that's true then you can't argue with my love for you. And no, I'm not going to stand in the way of your happiness, if Robin is who has your heart then I won't argue it but you cannot ask me to stop loving you."
He wanted her to trust him. There was no question of that. His one act of sheer madness had destroyed her and she had every right to kill him. If she tried he did not believe he would stop her. It would be deserved, more than deserved.
He held her gaze as she spoke trying to work out just why he could not just do as she asked. He should. If she meant anything to him then shouldn't he just do it. Walk away. Give her up. But she wanted a friendship, and if he couldn't have her love then he would take what he could get. But he would never stop loving her. "Tell me what I need to do, tell me what you want from me but do not ask that of me again. I would give you the world if I were able but I cannot give you that. I cannot make that promise."
