Her smile was small, and perhaps a bit bittersweet. But it was there. And genuine. To be honest, she never thought she could make him as happy as he seemed to think she would. One person couldn't possibly be responsible for ridding one of his sins, only the Heavenly Father could do so. He had so much faith in her, so much belief in her goodness that he thought it would make up for the things he had done. But she was only human. And she wasn't perfect. Finding out where her alliances were should've told him that.
She wanted to still care for him. Truly, she did. He hadn't always hurt her. For a time, he'd been one of the few to show concern towards her. She just also happened to be, at times, on the receiving end of his temper. Which was a dangerous place to be. She knew that better than most, even before her death.
"I want to trust you again," she finally confided, meeting his eyes. There was hope on her face, but it was shaky at best. "I don't guarantee I can do that, Guy. But I do want to."
Did she think she and Robin would be happy? More than anything. Oh, things were rocky at times. But, if she understood all the tellings of stories of love, they all had their rough patches. Why should hers be any different? That man was her entire heart and she knew that was difficult for Guy, but it couldn't be helped. She'd give anything to find happiness with Robin, and she was so nearly there.
"But please...don't hold on to me. Not..." She hesitated but forced herself to go on. This meeting was about honesty. If not, they could have said all of this over the computer boards and been fine. No, she needed to see his face. "Not in that way. I want us to be...like we used to be. Who we used to be. If you want me to be the person who tries so hard to make you better, you have to let go."
