It didn't matter to Anatoly that he didn't know who she was. It didn't even matter if she was one of the displaced, like he was, or if she was a native of this city and world. What mattered was that she was obviously upset and undoubtedly could use some company. And not seeing anyone else around that could be assumed to be coming to join her, Anatoly decided to ask. Because that was the human thing to do, and he couldn't ignore it. Though once she lifted her head, he recognized her from the complex. She was like him, obviously displaced. Which was good because then he wouldn't have to suffer being mistaken for Josh Groban. Which really was something that got tiresome, but what could he do?
"No need to apologize," he said gently with a little smile. "Would you like some company?" Still he was giving her the choice in the matter. He didn't want to impose his presence on anyone. Anatoly also had quite the gentlemanly way about him. He had manners and he adhered to them quite closely. It did make him stand out from most other men, but he didn't really care. He felt that manners got one further than being rude and forceful did. And in the long run, empathy also got one further than anything else. As much as Anatoly may be misread or misjudged by others, he had a true care for others. It was part of why he'd become a doctor and part of what made him good at being a doctor. He could see patients as human beings, not as things that needed to be made better. Now that he wasn't a chess robot any longer, he could appeal to the humanity in others again.
No doubt Svetlana would make some side comment to him about trying to help someone who was obviously distressed if she were here, but he'd have taken it. After all, it was more proof that he was more the man he'd once been, and he'd take that. He wasn't certain what exactly was wrong with the redheaded woman, and he wasn't sure he could even help, but he could offer company and an ear if she needed to talk. Anatoly was a remarkable listener after all. Still somewhat people awkward, or at least viewed as being awkward, but he knew how to connect with people. And so he'd make use of that now so long as she didn't push him away.
