Lancelot was making a habit of going out very early and coming in just as the sun went down. Attempting to be mindful of the boards, every once in a while. He wasn't an irresponsible sort but checking in, one could say, was a new concept for him. The year as Arthur's knight, the time as sword for higher and fighting for entertainment had been less than a year, and before all of that every once in a while when he'd been a child. Yet for the space of twenty-seven years the amount of time where it was required, or cared about, that his presence was known was a relatively small one. He was used to being on his own. His whereabouts not being pertinent on anyone's mind. He had learned to make a habit of course, in certain situations: for survival, for duty - checking in with who he needed to check in with. In Lawrence it was a bit different - he might have only been understating the situation - as there was no one he needed to report to and the foremost form interaction was through a box. That wasn't something that he was used to - but he was learning. Lancelot liked to learn how to adapt. It made the survival thing easier.
It was why he was often up when most people would be asleep. Other than being used to it - through travel, through needing to get out of dodge as expediantly as possible, and then as a knight. Here he would get up so he could learn. Learn how to fix the microwave. Then wake up early the next day to make up for the hours spent cleaning the microwave (plastic melts and how difficult it was to scrub was something that would stay with him and the weird noises microwaves made when upset). Learn how to use the Internet. Learn how to never touch anything with more than two Xs. Learn that red means stop and green means go. What money did and how food was different. He learned through hard work but mostly by trial and error. As he mostly did. He rarely asked. It wasn't that Lancelot was a shy person. He wasn't, though he could be rather quiet. He commented when he understood what he was commenting to (and there was still a lot beyond him). It was that he disliked being a burden. And he felt he would be with his far too many questions.
His quest today was Walmart. It took some walking but he'd walked further in his past. Lancelot stopped at a couple of places along the way but never for very long. His first thought upon coming face to doors with the store was that it was bigger than he expected.
That seemed to be the norm with the time.
Everything was bigger in size or scope than one could expect or imagine.
He walked aimlessly throughout the aisles, politely refusing the clerks, and doing his best make out some of the words under the objects. He was doing that for a good half hour when he noticed a young woman staring at him. He gave her a small smile and an acknowledging, brief, nod of his head. It wasn't unusual for people to stare at him. Apparently he reminded them of the actor Santiago Cabrera. Typically they went away after the smile to talk among themselves. A few would approach him asking for an autograph but would leave after they decided it was a misunderstanding. This woman kept on staring and Lancelot did his best not to stare in return. If not for good manners part of his fiber, he likely would have. She was a strong example of how modern clothing, especially on women, boggled his mind.
Things seemed to progress well enough. That is until she decided to approach him. And that was when matters turned a shade, or two, awkward.
