Who: Zatanna Zatara and Dick Grayson
What: Having coffee.
When: Thursday night.
Where: A coffee shop near youuu.
Warnings: Maybe a bit of angst. (Shocking, right?) Nothing else that I can think of so far.
Status: In progress

It had been a very long twenty-four hours. Of course, it hadn't been longer than any other twenty-four hour period, but it sure felt like it had. Drawing in a breath, Zatanna settled herself in the corner booth of the small cafe after a waitress showed her to the table. She ordered a cup of coffee, wrapping her hands around the hot mug and taking a slow sip, allowing her eyes to drift shut momentarily as she waited for Dick to arrive and join her.

Her stomach was in knots, and guilt was eating at her, though she did her best to push it back. Logically she knew what happened wasn't her fault. That her words to Emma and Dick were the truth: the werewolf attack had just been a tragic accident. It certainly couldn't be blamed on the werewolf, because from what Emma had told her, the woman didn't even know she was a werewolf. And it wasn't Emma's fault, either, even though the blond was clearly blaming herself.

She didn't understand why such terrible things happened, but she'd always done her best to face tragedy with acceptance and not try to deny its existence. That only made things worse in the end.

Something Lois had said struck a cord with Dick recently. Others had told him too that he needed to branch out more, but when someone who was supposed to know him didn't outside of work it made him worry a little. He was spending far too much time as Nightwing and not giving Dick Grayson any room to breathe. He'd made himself ill over it for a while and was only recently getting back on regular food. So he turned off the television, the news was only depressing anyway and left his apartment.

He wasn't known for being the most social but he was trying. He didn't want to end up alone like Bruce, so when Zatanna told him about Chloe and her magical attempt to save the victims he worried. He always worried about the people on his team, but he'd known Zatanna for quite a while. Dick held up a hand to shield his eyes from the sun for a moment as he put on his shades. He really wasn't too fond of extreme temperatures, but he was used to it. Gotham's winters were often frozen while summer was sweltering. He knew he had to take better care of himself or potentially end up in the hospital.

So it was time for a break whether he felt ready or not. The coffee shop wasn't far so he just walked. It didn't take long for him to arrive. He ordered himself an iced coffee and looked around for Zatanna. Sliding across from her he offered a little grin. "Hey Zee. Make that face too long and it'll stick that way."

Zatanna looked up at him and smiled faintly, nodding in response. "Thanks for the warning," she said, her voice lighter than she felt. She crossed her legs under the table and sat back against the booth, setting her mug down. "How's it going?"

She was a little surprised when he suggested meeting for coffee in the first place. Dick wasn't the most social person on the planet. Neither was she, really. She didn't isolate herself as much as the members of the bat family tended to, but she was no Lois Lane, either.

"Alfred always used to say that." He smirked a bit as he sank back into his chair and shrugged. "Keeping busy. It's a lot more work then I expected maintaining a circus." Unless he found a partner, chances were he was going to be unable to do it alone all season long. He supposed that could be an advantage to signing with Dark, but the disadvantages were also great. Who knew what could happen? Dark had a partner somewhere and that was the part that made him worry. What happened to him? He was left in the alternate world that Dark came from but in what condition?

"Then there's nightly patrol. Whatever trouble Jason gets himself into.."Dick rubbed the back of his neck as he gave a forced grin and shrugged. "How are you holding up?" He paused a moment to look her over. He'd known her for a while, he knew when she wasn't doing so well and he worried. She was a friend. It was only natural. "Starting to feel a bit too much like home you know?" Gotham wasn't a horrible place but it wasn't Dick's first choice of living either.

"I remember," she admitted with a small smile and a nod. "But you're doing well with it." At least from what she could tell.

She sighed softly at the mention of Jason. He certainly did get himself into a lot of trouble. She wished she knew how to help Dick and Bruce deal with him, but they knew the guy a lot better than she did. And if they didn't have anymore luck than they did, what could she possibly do?

"I'm okay," she said quietly, looking down at her coffee mug once more. "I feel horrible for Lois."
