Adapting was certainly a useful ability, especially in this place where anything could happen at any given time. Elphaba had that ability, just in a different way. Well perhaps it was more survival than straight up having the ability to adapt. After all, she'd been on the run in Oz and had learned how to hide herself. She'd learned what she needed to in order to survive. Here? She seemed to be learning to adapt as she went. She didn't need to survive here, not anymore. She'd still needed it when she'd first arrived. When she'd had to save Jack when no one else even cared to look for him. When Jack had been sent back to his world, suddenly leaving her alone once again. And how many friends had the Seal taken from her since being here? So many times it gave her friends, then took them away. At least it had given her Elena back, but how long before it decided to take Elena away again? Loss was not something Elphaba could handle, especially under repeated exposure to it in this world. And Galinda had been the straw that had broken her back, so to speak. But even so, she was trying to be strong, trying to work through it. But she knew what awaited Galinda in Oz, and she really didn't want Galinda to live through all of that. It wasn't fair, especially for all the things the green witch had done to the blonde.
And despite her fears, Elphaba had still shown Marguerite her true skin color. Because really, it would have come up sooner or later. It was just best to have done it now as proof magic was real in this world because it was the only thing she could do that Marguerite wouldn't have some explanation for. Instantaneous changing skin color was impossible to explain away in a scientific manner. Unless you were a chameleon, but even then. So really, this was the best proof Elphaba could give.
Marguerite's reaction was shocking to Elphaba. She'd expected some measure of recoil, or at least disbelief. But...there was acceptance. Which, okay, did happen because just look at the people who were her friends. But still. To someone who came from a world without magic or even believed in it? This was a shocking reaction. But it was one Elphaba could accept. After all, she wasn't being called names or anything, so she accepted it.
"I was born this way. I don't really know why, and no one else had this color skin." She shrugged a shoulder a bit, looking at her hands. Elphaba figured it was just some sort of magic that made her this way. She had no other explanation and no other explanation had ever been offered to her. "That is also probably how the Seal itself works. It's about the best explanation anyone has for it." For the moment, she left her skin green. It was late enough where the park wasn't crawling with people. But she was ready to cast the spell again at a moment's notice if need be.
Speaking of the time...
"Um, I know this may be strange since we don't really know each other, but considering it's late, you are more than welcome to stay at my house. There's plenty of room. I have a couple roommates, and we can help you adjust and such. There is an apartment complex where many people displaced like us live. I can take you there if you want to, but my house is closer currently." Elphaba suddenly realized she was babbling a bit, so she stopped herself from saying anything further until Marguerite responded.
