At the sound of her laugh, Priestly grinned. "Ah, mission accomplished. You're easy, Ames," he joked, giving her a wink. "I wasn't even really trying that time." Whether she was laughing because she thought he was ridiculous or because she thought he was funny, Priestly didn't actually care. The important thing was that she was laughing at all. He'd have gladly taken just a smile, if he was honest.
The expression on Amy's face when he finally looked back up at her after straightening the blankets looked almost hopeful, if he had to guess. She started to say something, but stopped herself and Priestly was confused. On the one hand, it looked like she wanted to talk about whatever the nightmare had been and like no one had ever given her the chance to until now. But, on the other hand, she hesitated and it made him wonder if he was being unintentionally pushy.
But then she said she wanted some water and Priestly nodded. "Comin' right up," he responded immediately, starting toward the door. He stopped when he heard her say something else, looking back at her over his shoulder. She did want to talk about it, then. "I'm all ears. Gimme a sec, be right back," he said, excusing himself to retrieve the glass of water.
When Priestly returned, he handed her the glass and dropped unceremoniously down beside her. "You have my undivided attention," he informed her with a small smile.
