Abby had been in Lawrence for a month now and for all intents and purposes, she was doing all right. She had adapted to her new surroundings as she always had. It was what she knew, to adapt was to survive and after all she had been through, like hell was Abby letting something like being displaced in an alternate universe be what did her in. So as she always had done, Abby learned her surroundings. She learned what she needed. And it wasn't like she was stuck in the Cretaceous era. She was still in modern times. Just...a year jump and different country and apparently she was fictional. It helped that Connor was there. It helped a lot. Because he had become a constant in her life where she almost had none beyond her lizards. Okay, so he wasn't the Connor she had proposed to. The one who gave her the ring he wore around his neck. Not yet. Maybe not ever as he had been here a year and that changed people. But he was still Connor.
From what she was hearing, today was a holiday. A bank holiday but the nature preserve was open for families. Which was fine. It kept her from worrying on Astor and confusing herself on how she had gotten so protective of the twelve year old. She was in the complex, she was still safe. It was fine. So now she was focusing on explaining the differences between reptiles and mammals to children.
Pulling an endangered lizard out of its enclosement, the petite blond turned her attention to the group she was speaking to.
"This is Cleo. She is a-"
Or a bunch of screams could break out and people could start running.
"What the..."
And that was when Abby saw a mannequin shoot a coworker. From its hand. Okay, that wasn't normal. It was weird. But Abby was used to weird. Pausing only briefly, the petite woman started shouting orders as the staff in the reptile house so that they could help protect the people in there. It was madness. But at least there were no mannequins in there with them. That was something. Even so, Abby had taken to twisting her engagement ring around her finger in a nervous habit. She didn't have her phone to text Connor to see if he knew what was going on and she couldn't check the boards to see if this was city wide or what and if there were a plan of attack.
"Who gave you that?"
Blinking as the question, Abby looked down to the six year old, who was terrified.
"What?"
"Your ring."
Random but it made sense. It was a means to stay distracted.
"My fiance, Connor. I asked him to marry me and he said yes and gave me the ring. It was his mum's and represents finding real love no matter the odds."
She should have kept the ring on the chain she wore when around Connor in her attempt to keep it from seeming like she was pressuring him to be with her. But when she was alone or at work, she wore the ring as it was meant to be worn because it was still true to her.
"So he'll save us?"
"Yeah. Yeah he will. We'll be fine."
She didn't know why the girl asked that, but if it made her feel better, then fine. Besides, the things seemed mechanic. Connor very well could save them by doing his computer thing. So for now, it was ensuring everyone was safe as were the reptiles. With the six year old calmed, Abby started to take a head count of both humans and reptiles. And that was when she realized Cleo was missing.
"Dammit!" Looking to a fellow staff member, Abby motioned him over, "I need to find Cleo"
"Are you insane?! Who knows where she is!"
"I don't care. I'm going after her. Just keep everyone in here safe."
And before further protest could be made, Abby ducked into the employee entrance and started searching for Cleo. The lights going out while she was in a hallway on her own? Not exactly comforting but it wasn't a new sensation either. It was like going after Rex during the lock down when it was certain death.
"C'mon, Cleo. Its me, Abby..." Or she could hear movement. Eyes narrowing, the petite blond made her way to where she heard the movement. And came face to face with a mannequin. Yep. Definitely unnerving. But Abby fought dinosaurs and future creatures. Mer-creatures. She could do this. Sending a kick to the torso, she ran down the hallway, ducking and rolling as she heard shots fired. Scrambling up, Abby grabbed a case of food and threw it at the head of the mannequin before she started running again. Dodging into a supply closet, Abby closed her eyes, listening. She was taken back to her childhood, hiding from an abusive foster parent but it helped now as she knew how to listen. It was a good hour before she was certain it was safe. Very slowly, the blond left her spot and hugged the wall as she continued her search for Cleo. Or she could round a corner into three of the mannequins.
"Bloody hell!"
Time to dodge again as she grabbed a hook on a stick to use to defend herself with. Knocking a head off, Abby turned her attention to the next one, only to get shot in the shoulder. That hurt. But she had to keep fighting. But the pain was blinding and there were spots and then darkness.
