This was why she hadn't wanted to lead the men to fight. She couldn't be responsible for their deaths. She had already killed once. And because she had believed in Hope, all the people Hope had killed... their blood was her fault. And Phlanagus was dead because he had placed his trust in her as Xena had told him to. Because Gabrielle knew Caesar and would recognize the trap that had been set. She had only meant to warn him, not lead them and now it was too late. Men were dead. Temecula had killed and now everything would be different for him as well.
Having sent the men to look for the injured, Gabrielle remained where she was, surrounded by dead bodies, Phlanagus' head resting on her lap, her helmet off and Temecula mourning the loss of his father figure. She had done as she'd been told. Everything had played out just as Xena had said. Or most of it. Because Phlanagus had been meant to live. His wife was a widow, his son fatherless. It wasn't fair or right. And it had been her fault. How was she supposed to forgive herself for this? For failing at protecting him. For missing. For leading him to this fight? Was it right? Was any of this right or for a good cause? She believed so in the sanctity of human life and all around her was death.
Despite the fact that she hadn't closed her eyes, that she was just staring straight ahead, something changed. The scenery. She wasn't in Greece. This was not a blood soaked field filled with death and despair. She was surrounded by trees and could hear a language she didn't recognize. She didn't know where she was and truthfully, she didn't have the energy to get up but she knew she had to. She had to find out where she was. Had to get back to Xena... Still in a daze, the blond pushed herself up and started towards where she heard noise only to see... metallic things racing by. That... wasn't normal. At all. She knew the Gods could do things, confuse her but who? Why?
