"I'm just..." He trailed off into silence for a second or two. What was it that a person was supposed to tell the one they loved in those last few moments they were together? Damon tried to think. "You just need to know..." He let out another cough and then a pathetic sort of wheeze. "I love you."

That was it. If he died she would know how he'd felt about her. It had been that way shortly after he'd met her. If he lived... Well, wouldn't that be awkward? Still, Damon felt that it was absolutely worth the risk.
