Sam lay quietly for a long while, contemplating the days to come ahead. They would need to work hard. Exercise plenty of caution. Not to mention they'd have to keep an eye out, not only for Lilith, but for anyone else that might think that they'd be able to pull one up and over the bitch by breaking the Seals themselves. There had to be others out there just as interested in freeing Lucifer from Hell as she was herself. They'd have to watch out, keep their ears to the ground, and listen. If there were other beings out there rooting for Lucifer's freedom, then he, Dean, and Ruby were just going to have to take care of them. But Lilith was priority. No matter what her intent had been, Sam wanted her dead. He had wanted her dead even before he had known as to what she had been up to all this time.
"Hey, Ruby, do you think -" Sam turned his head a little, craning his neck just so that he could see the face that was resting along his chest.
She had fallen asleep.
Sam's brows knit together as he stared, caught in a lift of surprise. He didn't think that she'd do that. Ruby always seemed to wait for him to leave or he'd be the one to go first. It had been a while since the latter had happened, ever since Dean had gotten back, so the bailing out was usually the way to go. But never anything like this. Quietly, he brought a hand up to stroke at her hair, head falling back against the pillow as Sam fell into a brief moment of thought once again. Ruby kept changing on him. First she was the aggressive, rude, and sarcastic blonde. Then she was the one to save his life, spilling out words of motivation for him to track Lilith down and avenge his brother. Now...now she was comfort. Motivational and very helpful, yes, but now, when he couldn't even talk to his own brother, Sam knew that he had her.
She was too close. Too, too close. He didn't like it at all. He couldn't afford it. And her? No. She wouldn't like it either. It was better to distance himself. Focus on the job. He had to play it smart.
Shifting awkwardly underneath her, Sam eased his way to the side and reached for a pillow. His shoulder was replaced with the pillow tucked beneath Ruby's head, making the process of slipping away all that much easier. Standing from the bed, Sam hastily shoved his clothes back on, turned for the door, and...then he stopped.
The comforter was wrapped around Ruby's shoulders before Sam pulled the door to her room open and left. He had a brother to get back to. A world that made sense; a world that wasn't as fucked up and confusing as the one that resided within Ruby's motel room.
