He'd never been to Kansas, had never wanted to go to Kansas, and was currently wishing that Kansas was just a dream brought on by a coma that would be just as welcome as a billion dollars and a lifetime supply of tacos would be.
Because if this wasn't a coma induced dream, then he had no answers for why he was walking around like he'd never been shot and beaten so badly that he'd ended up with no false hopes of getting better.
An hour ago, he'd woken up, discovered that he had a pulse, and had breathed a big sigh of relief, feeling lucky, feeling like he'd won the lottery and everything was going to be better, feeling like everything was going to be okay. And then he really came back down to earth, realized that he was sprawled out on a bench in a deserted park, and stopped thinking about all the things he was going to say to his aunt, to Mary Jane, to Johnny and Gwen and anybody else who would listen.
Peter wasn't in a hospital bed. There was no beeping from machines, no nurses gazing into his face, no Aunt May saying He's awake. Thank god he's awake." and coming closer and hugging him to her like she was never going to let him go again. There was nobody at all, only the chirping of birds who must have been freezing, and the distant sound of cars and a jet passing by overhead.
Disoriented and confused, Peter lifted himself up on his elbows, noticed the mask covering his face and reached up to peel it down around his neck. The breath he took into his lungs was deep and long. He wanted to make sure he really was breathing. The cool air was enough to tell him that he was, and for the moment, that alone was promising.
But it was dark now, and he had no civilian clothing. Looking very out of place, he scaled a wall to a building that was supposed to house The Best Cupcakes in the World and took to the roof as silent as a shadow. With the mask back where it belonged, he looked out at the unfamiliar city he was in and decided that something was very, very wrong here.
