When: Sunday afternoon
Rating: Depends on who tags?
Status: In Progress

It had been years since she'd been in Lawrence, Kansas. Much of Dawn's past few years had been spent in D.C., particularly after she had begun working at the Pentagon. At first, she never took a vacation because there was too much to do. Later, she never took one because she was too busy cleaning up after Jimmy. Jimmy, the one person she trusted with her life, since everyone else they knew had died or gone into hiding - or sent back, years ago before the end of the war.

At the moment, she stood on a street corner downtown, staring across at the window of pizza and doughnut shop she remembered frequenting when she'd lived there. It was open now, of course, and business was fairly good, but she didn't start across, not yet. She wore dark, boot-cut jeans, a light, dark blue sweater, a deep tan trench coat, and tan boots. While she didn't look armed, she had weapons on her person, and a part of her mind was ready to bring forth a spell if she needed it. It had taken a while, but eventually she had adapted some of the magic from her own world to the magic of this one, and had a good stock of defensive and offensive spells. Nothing 'evil' or dabbling in demon deals, the way Felicia had seemed to suspect, but effective all the same.

Closing her bright blue eyes, she thought for a moment, back to when she was eighteen and standing on this corner. The sounds were the same, the smell - tomatoes and sugar - was just as tantalizing. Reopening her eyes, she slipped her hands into the pocket of her coat and waited for traffic to clear so she could cross.

Buffy had thought that talking to Dawn would make everything better, but it hadn't. Dawn didn't have the answers that Buffy needed to hear. All she knew was that her little sister might be in some kind of trouble. Now that Ariel was safe and sound at least Buffy didn't have to worry about people hunting her sister down, or having to do something herself to intervene. The whole situation seemed like it had been blown way out of proportion by people sticking their noses where it didn't belong. Dawn didn't have anything to do with Ariel's kidnapping. She had been trying to help. If others were too blind to see that, well, then shame on them.

The blond vampire slayer had been searching for Dawn since early Saturday morning, but it wasn't until now that she finally spotted her out in the open. Buffy's heart nearly jumped out of her chest and she had to take in a deep breath to calm herself. Talking to her little-big sister shouldn't be so nerve wracking, but Buffy was a little frightened that maybe Dawn had some things to say that she didn't want to hear. But, Buffy hardened herself and walked straight up to Dawn, approaching from behind and reaching out to grab Dawn by the arm and spin her around.

"Where have you been?" Buffy demanded immediately. "I've been looking everywhere for you."

She had been on the verge of stepping off the curb when her arm was grabbed and she was yanked around. Her free hand had come out of the pocket automatically, the words of a spell on her lips, when she came face to face with her sister. It was a little unnerving, seeing her at this age - and having to look down at her, since she'd grown even taller than her sister than she used to be. It was weird in general, seeing her sister here - alive and well. And right now, pissed, apparently.

Pulling her arm out of Buffy's grip, her hand slipped back into her pocket as blue eyes met green directly. "A hotel. I stayed there until I knew it was safe to come out." Her head tilted a little, and she smiled at Buffy, for the moment pushing aside her wall. "I was going to go get a pizza, then call you."

It was crazy looking at Dawn older than Buffy was, but it was still little Dawnie. The same bright blue eyes, the same brown hair, the same demeanor. It didn't matter how older Dawn ever got, Buffy would always recognize her and she would always stick up for her. She knew Dawn would kidnap someone and she certainly wouldn't kill anyone, but apparently not everyone in Kansas felt the same way. What had Dawn been up to for the two years she had been in Kansas without her?

"Uh huh," Buffy replied, letting go of Dawn and crossing her arms over her chest. The posture was her usual 'I'm going to give you a lecture now' posture and the expression on her face said the same thing. "Why don't I join you for pizza then? We can catch up. You can tell me all about what's been going on here. There are people around here who don't understand what you're about, Dawn, and that scares them. I don't know what you're about either. Why don't you tell me?"

"People are always scared of what they don't understand. The unknown." Her shoulders lifted in a small shrug. "There isn't really much to say. And whatever I'm 'about' doesn't really matter to them, because at some point, the seal will get bored with this game and send me back to 2022." Back to hell, but she wasn't going to say that. Too melodramatic for Dawn now.

"But lunch would be good." Keeping that same pleasant smile on her lips, Dawn glanced at the street. Since there was a small break in the traffic, she headed on across, leaving her sister to follow her - which she knew Buffy would. That was one thing that Dawn did know about her sister...she'd never abandon her. When she reached the restaurant, she pulled open the door, then turned to wait for Buffy to reach her.

"Maybe it doesn't matter to them, but it matters to me," Buffy replied. "They don't get to judge you, Dawn. No one does, but I can't keep you safe if I'm not in the loop. This isn't like you. We don't lie to each other. We don't keep secrets. We're a team." Buffy wanted to ask how that had changed in the future, but she thought she had an idea. If Dawn was nearing 30, well... Buffy was probably six feet under. Looking at Buffy now probably wasn't very comfortable, but she didn't care. She couldn't care. She needed to know what was going on so she could keep everyone safe, including anymore innocents.

Buffy dropped her arms from her chest, took in a deep breath and started to follow Dawn. Her little sister was right. Buffy would never abandon Dawn, not even when it meant that she had to sacrifice her own self to keep Dawn alive. There was no one more important to her than Dawnie. No one at all.

"After you," Buffy told Dawn when they reached the door. Even if Dawn decided to run it wasn't like Buffy couldn't catch her, but she didn't really feel like running after Dawn again. She wasn't about let her out of her sight.

"There's no loop to keep you in, Buffy. It's done with." Dawn shrugged, her hand tightening for a moment on the door she was holding, before she finally shrugged and stepped into the cafe'. It was strange, as the smell hit her, seeming so familiar, yet at the same time - so different. After standing there for a moment, looking around, Dawn finally walked over to a table in the corner and sat so that she could see the entire restaurant.

Her gaze shifted to watch her sister for a moment. It had been years since she'd seen Buffy outside of pictures, and this...this was just so strange. And almost painful. But she wouldn't let it affect her. At some point, she'd go back to the future and Buffy...Buffy would be here. But not there.

Forcing out a smile as Buffy sat, Dawn nodded to the menu. "Order whatever you want. My treat."

"Like hell," Buffy replied, following Dawn doggedly into the cafe. She took a seat across from her little sister and proceeded to stare her down. This Dawn was so different from the one Buffy knew. She just didn't want to give her anything, did she? Maybe the situation was over, but Buffy still didn't really understand what exactly had happened or if there was potential for it happening again.

Buffy rolled her eyes and pushed the menu aside when Dawn offered to buy. Sure, she was hungry. She hadn't eaten much lately, but she was more interested in what her sister had to say. "Can you please tell me what happened with Ariel? You didn't kidnap her, did you? And what is this business about trying to leave information behind for your younger self to find? It doesn't sound like people like that very much. Personally, I couldn't care less. I think they're freaking out over nothing, but I'm not used to you not talked to me, Dawn. I really need you to. Please? For me?"

Dawn met her sister's eyes steadily at first. She'd stared down generals, presidents, and armed dignitaries all over recent years. But, she realized as her gaze finally fell a little, Buffy could still affect her. She'd thought she had put her sister's death behind her, and now? It was becoming painfully obvious that she hadn't.

She sighed and reached out to pick up the cheese shaker, fiddling with it absently. "The Ariel thing...that shouldn't have happened." Her gaze snapped back up to meet her sister's eyes, at first shocked Buffy would think that of her. A moment later, the shock passed, covered by a faint coolness, and Dawn set the shaker down, sitting back to calmly cross her arms over herself. "No. I didn't kidnap her. That was all Jimmy - who did it to ensure that the confrontation with his father would be a one-on-one deal. He wouldn't have hurt her any more than you would." At the question about leaving information, Dawn could barely restrain from rolling her eyes.

"A spell or two that might be needed isn't leaving information that can change the future. In fact, it might actually help keep someone alive when they would otherwise be killed. It could even stop someone from making a terrible mistake." As for opening bank accounts, well, it was always good to have a backup plan, should the need arise.
