Who: Angel & Buffy
What: Buffy has something to talk to Angel about.
When: Friday evening [2-3-12]
Where: Angel Investigations
Rating/Status: TBD/In progress

Angel wasn't really sure what exactly it was Buffy wanted to talk about, but he was trying to convince himself he was ready for whatever it was. That wasn't going too well, however. Not knowing was a little unnerving and for some reason, it made him a little nervous. He shouldn't be nervous, right? This was Buffy. Even if what she had to say was on the serious side, she was at least coming to him about it. Whatever it was.

He had given her the address to the new branch of Angel Investigations he'd been working on setting up here in Lawrence. The company was familiar and in a place where so much was unfamiliar, it was comforting to have something recognizable around. Tonk had done a damn good job on her restoration of the old office building she'd found. Set them up with various levels of protection with spells of her own variety, includng a nifty one that, if Angel understood correctly, put some sort of shield around the building. With so many different forms of magic in one place, it was hard to keep up. They'd agreed to keep it on a need-to-know basis and so far, not many people knew about the place at all. He didn't worry about Buffy, though. She wasn't a threat, she was on their side, so there hadn't been so much as a second thought in his mind about giving her the address.

Waiting wasn't something Angel was all that great at. It made him antsy and he never quite knew what to do with himself when he was waiting. Ironic, almost, as a vampire he should probably have more patience, but things were never exactly normal where Buffy was concerned.

Buffy wasn't exactly the sort to go to the people in her life with her problems. She kept everything to herself. She felt like it was her duty to shoulder the weight of the world. It had been hard enough trying to go to Willow or Xander with the things she was carrying around. They had their own lives, their own problems. She hated piling her own hurts on top of theirs. And going to someone like Angel or Spike? Completely out of the question and yet somehow Spike always knew what was going on with her anyway. She could talk to him and she didn't know why.

But no, this meeting wasn't about heaven, hell, the apocalypse... any of that. It was about her little sister who she needed to protect. Dawn might be older and have lived in Kansas without her for two long years, but Buffy wanted to step up and be back in Dawn's life again. If that meant being around Angel too then so be it. Eventually the two of them would have to work out their problems, but Buffy was completely content to ignore them and hope they would go away on their own. She was really good at that.

Buffy had a hard time finding the location of the building. She wasn't familiar with the area yet so it made her a little later than she would have liked. In fact she couldn't find the place at all at first. It should have been right there in between the two addresses, but it just... wasn't. It wasn't until Buffy pulled out the piece of paper she had written the address down on that the building opened itself up to her and popped out of no where.

"That was different," she said as she made her way through the door that read: Angel Invesigations.

"Hello?" she asked the room. "Angel?"

Angel heard her as soon as she set foot in the building and he was already making his way towards the front door by the time she called out to him. "Buffy," He smiled as he approached her. He hadn't seen her in...a long time, and somehow seeing her didn't really help the nerves he spent his time waiting trying to ignore.

"Did you find the place okay?" He asked, curious if the cloaking spell that Tonks had put up around the place actually worked. If it did, that was possibly the biggest advantage they'd have on their side once they actually got the business up and running. He had almost forgotten how much of a pain starting from the ground up was.

Buffy stopped in her tracks when she saw Angel. It had been a really long time since she set eyes on her first love and she was pretty sure it wasn't supposed to feel this way. She felt like she had been punched in the stomach. There really was no one like your first love and Buffy wasn't sure if she would ever really get over him.

"Not really," she admitted. "Did you put some kind of cloaking spell on it or something? It didn't appear until I stood in front of it and read the address on this piece of paper I wrote it down on." She held the paper up for Angel to see.

"Yeah, we did, actually," He smirked slightly. "Good to know it works the way Tonks said it would." he said with a slight nod. Somehow, keeping things light was easier. Stay off subject, on the pleasantries and the basic ice breaker conversations and things were all right. At least that's what he was repeatedly telling himself in his mind as he tried to push away thoughts that he had rather have kept repressed for another decade longer or so before having to face them all again.

"I'm working with her to try and re-create the business I had back in L.A. in our world." He explained, assuming she would be curious. Not to mention it gave him something to focus on saying rather than...other things. "We're still in the early stages and everything, but with Dawn's unlimited funds and Tonks' magic, we're up to a pretty good start."

"Oh," Buffy nodded as she stood awkwardly in the lobby. It was all she could do to keep her mind off of this Tonks woman. Buffy didn't know who she was and she wasn't sure she really wanted to even if it was really silly to be jealous.

"That's what I came to talk to you about, actually," she said. It was better to cut to the chase. She hated that awkward feeling of walking on eggshells around Angel. "Dawn told me she was working with you here. You have to know that now that I'm here I have an opinion about that? She's my little sister and it's my responsibility to take care of her."

He wasn't sure how to judge that tiny comment. Maybe he shouldn't be trying to judge anything. That might get him in trouble, right? He couldn't deny how he felt about Buffy, but he also knew he couldn't have that, so there was no point in assuming things, or even wondering about them when the possibility of it ever being a reality again was slim to none. They couldn't risk it, and that was that. Or it should have been, but it had never really been that simple between them, it's part of why he left Sunnydale, afterall.

Damn. Protecting Dawn. That's what this was about. He could deal with that. He could handle that. "Of course," He nodded slowly, "She's your sister, you want her safe. I understand that. But you know she's safe with me, Buffy. Don't you?" Unless Wes came through that seal and talked him into releasing Angelus again. But he wasn't too keen on letting that happen, Wes or no Wes, so he kept that part to himself because there was definitely a lot of worry that statement could have produced and that was the last thing he needed to add to this conversation.

Buffy did know better than going there with Angel even though a part of her still loved him. She knew they couldn't be together and it was tragic because the only reason they couldn't be together was that they loved each other too much. How messed up was that? No, nothing was simple when it came to Buffy and Angel and these days they usually fought or made moon eyes when they saw each other, as few times as that was. Angel was hard on her, but she knew it was his way of coping with everything.

Protecting Dawn was an easy conversation to have. There was no reason to go into unprotected territory, was there? Buffy wasn't sure how she would handle that what with Spike showing up and boasting about his shiny new soul. "Come on, Angel," Buffy tilted her head at him and gave him her customary 'are you serious?' look. "I don't trust anyone to keep Dawn as safe as I can."

Buffy took in a deep breath and let out a long sigh before she turned away from Angel and started to walk around the room. It was too much standing there looking at him. She needed something else to keep her attention. "Listen, I just came from.. I almost lost her, Angel. She was in a car accident and it was my fault for not keeping a better eye on her. I was too busy --" she caught herself before she mentioned anything regarding Spike. That wouldn't go over too well. "And I had thought I left her with someone I trusted... with Willow, only she was more lost than I thought. I'm not going to let that happen again."

"I'm aware," he chuckled softy, shaking his head, "but you have to understand she's not the same little sister you remember, either." he point out. "She's grown up. She's changed. She can protect herself pretty well after living in this insanity for two years." He watched her as she opted to walk around and look at the room. It was probably easier for her that way.

"That's always been your problem, Buffy, once you accepted your duty as a Slayer, you've always taken it over that line, trying to handle everything completely on your own." He shook his head, "Things never work out well when you do that, do they? You have to let someone else shoulder the burden every now and then, too." Hypocritical as that may have sounded coming from him, they both knew it was true.

"You think I don't know that?" Buffy turned around to face Angel. He had managed to ruffle her feathers, but then it was easy to set Buffy off when it came to Dawn. No matter what, she always felt like it was her job to keep her sister safe. It just was.

"But thanks for pointing my problem out for me. It's so plain to see now," she rolled her eyes and her shoulders felt tense. It was easier to fight with Angel than it was to be honest. At least they weren't talking about them, their past.

"I don't care if you and everyone else in this place thinks I need to let someone else lift the load or whatever. Dawn is my little sister and if she's going to be working here I want in."

He couldn't help the tiny smirk that tugged at his lips as she went on that mini-rant. He wasn't surprised by it at all, she had always been overprotective and a little defensive when it came to Dawn. It was understandable, most siblings were protective of each other and given the general excessive dangers they dealt with would only naturally increase that level of protectiveness.

"I don't have a problem with that, Buffy," He said simply. That was mostly true. There were certain things he that the two of them working together might bring back to the surface, but for the time being, he was still ignoring that and he would until he was forced to face it. "You're a welcome addition to the team." Keep it professional and it would be fine. That's what he kept telling himself and he would keep telling himself that until he believed it.

Angel's reaction stopped Buffy in her tracks. She had been ready for a fight. She had been ready to argue her way in or pull Dawn out completely, but this? This was too easy. He left her there blinking at him with her mouth slightly open as she tried to compose herself.

"Well, good," she said finally, still looking and sounding surprised. She was very close to bringing up their past and why it would be horrible for them to work together, how it could bring up old feelings, how it could complicate things, but Angel seemed content to ignore it so Buffy was too.

"I'm glad that's settled them," and with that she fell into an awkward silence. Seriously. She could probably cut the awkwardness that hung in the air with a knife.

He couldn't help the soft chuckle that came at her surprise. He shook his head a little, "I'm not going to fight you over protecting your sister, Buffy. I know you well enough to know that you'd find a way to make it happen even if I didn't agree with it. And....she's your sister. You're going to worry. But I will take no part in sibling rivalry." He smirked slightly. "You two will have to work all of that out on your own."

Ignoring everything shouldn't be this easy, and if he were honest, it wasn't, but he had to pretend that it was. His only other option was to focus on the awkwardness and that leaned towards talking about...things and he was pretty sure neither of them wanted to go down that road right now. "So, uhm, there's only a very few people that know where this place is, and we definitely want to keep it that way." Not that he thought, even for a fraction of a second, that Buffy would even say anything about the location of the building, but it was something to say and at this point, he was grasping for anything to say at all just to fill the silence.

"I just thought you might not want me around because.." her voice trailed off. They had been doing so well at avoiding the subject, but Buffy really hated pussyfooting around situations. Angel was the only person she ever really did it with and that was only because it hurt too bad to rehash everything that had happened.

"Don't worry," Buffy said with a shrug. "I won't tell anyone where your secret hideout is. I want to keep this place as safe as you do," but they both knew Angel was just trying to make conversation. Well, Buffy wasn't going to stick around to make conversation. She had things to do. Important things like patrolling.

"Thanks, Angel. I mean that. I'll..uh.. get out of your hair," she shrugged her shoulders and gave him a half smile.

If he'd had a heartbeat, Angel was pretty sure it would be racing when she started that sentence. "I want you around as long as you want to be around." A simple statement that could be seen as a purely business sort of statement, but also had that double-edged sword of a deeper meaning sitting behind it. Angle was good at making comments like that.

"I'm not worried," he admitted with a slight shrug of his own, "You're one of the people here that I know I can trust, beyond a shadow of a doubt." He could tell she was getting antsy and honestly, that was okay with him because maybe it would speed this up a little and he could go hide from all the awkward that was this meeting for awhile.

"Don't mention it." he said with a slight shake of his head, "I'm sure you have some.. patrolling to do." Yes, end the conversation. That was a good thing, even if it shouldn't be.

No, Buffy didn't really want to be around Angel. It was too confusing and he always made everything so muddled for her. There was a point in time where they told each other they would stay away for a few years so maybe they could forget everything that happened, but guess what? It was a few years later and it still hurt just as much as it did back then. There was no use getting into all of that though. Nothing had changed. Angel was still a vampire and they couldn't be together.

"Yeah," she replied with a forced smile. "I've got some patrolling. I'll leave you to it," and without saying any of the things she really wanted to say (rare, I know) Buffy turned and left the building, leaving Angel behind.
