It felt good to be back at work again. Really good. Oh, it wasn't her team back in Boston, but in fairness, Emma had never really grown close to the bail bondsmen she'd worked for. To be honest, she didn't really grow close to much of anyone. No, what she enjoyed was the work itself. Tracking down the lying, stealing, cheating scum and making them pay. Literally, in most cases, as the issue was almost always money. Typical.
She had research to do in order to get herself started, though. People to question, feelers to put out. She didn't have the contacts she used to, she had to start from scratch. While once, getting up bright and early on a Sunday would have been ridiculous, the man had embezzled from, of all places, a church. And their staff would arrive early and she had to catch them before they were so caught up in their lives that they brushed off her sly and curious questions.
Walking had sounded good at the time. Though it was cold out, she'd dealt with worse, and she donned the red leather jacket she typically wore, a plain black sweater, and warm slacks and headed out, biting her lip against the wind. Maybe what she should have wished for was her car. With its heater.
So, obviously, she was surprised when she saw the man. Probably her age, give or take a few years, and handsome, sure. But dressed entirely inappropriately. And while once she would have just ignored him and kept walking, her curious nature got the better of her. "You realize they're predicting snow for this weekend, right?" she asked, her usual levels of snark slipping into her tone.
Well, he'd brought it on himself, going around in nothing but a dress shirt and slacks!
