"It was. I did not even realize it had happened until I feared I would lose him because he had recklessly put himself in harms way to protect me.... and then I realized it was too late to protect my heart from him because he was already there..." The faint smile at the memory faded though when Rei started to talk about her father. It reminded her of the past five years with Anatoly. Him never being around despite the promises he had made. It was always the game for him, it had become his life. And from the sounds of it, that had happened with Rei's father. He let the politics take over and stopped caring about everything else, even things he should care about, such as his father.
"Trust is hard to earn, there are some who trust blindly, but for others, it seems impossible to earn. Perhaps it is because their is an air of distrust everywhere you go, someone always waiting to turn on someone. Or in your case, because you saw someone you should trust go against everything you would think for pride. Whatever the case, it is hard... And you are right... if someone truly loves another, they should be there for them when they need it most. I cannot speak for your father as I do not know his mind, truthfully, this is something more Anatoly could touch upon because he was like that in regards to chess to the point where he was distant and then gone for five years because he let pride and ambition get the best of him.... though I do wonder if perhaps part of your father's reasoning was fear of losing love, so he hid behind his work and fear of remembering when he looks at you... it is not an excuse, it never will be.... but fear is also a powerful motivator for people. It can control someone and turn them into someone they themselves do not recognize, along with pride."
Sighing, Svetlana shrugged.
"As I said, this is probably something more Anatoly would understand than I do, so these are just speculations on my part...."
And then Rei was crying and the blond had no idea on what to do. If it were one of the girls, she would simply hug them, stroke their hair, sing softly and comfort them. But they were her daughters, she knew what worked for them. Even Anatoly she would know what to do. True, they were working on things, but Svetlana still knew the man and knew how to handle such things. But a fourteen year old girl who was a miniature version of herself whom she had just met? Well... Okay. Miniature version of herself. If she were in this situation, how would Svetlana respond to someone comforting her, what would work best.... Hesitantly, the Russian woman reached over and took Rei's hand, squeezing it gently and just waited until she had calmed down even slightly.
"Are you all right...? If you like, we could get some tea? If not at a cafe, then in my apartment as I have a variety..."
She truthfully wasn't exactly sure on how Rei would respond, but Svetlana self medicated with tea, so it was at least worth a shot.
