Brittany threw her arms around Tina, pulling her into a huge bear hug. She sniffled and gave a tiny sob before pulling away to give her explanation.
“I...” She sniffled pathetically, trying to catch her breath so that she could actually speak. “Chess is a lie!!” Brittany shouted it out, looking miserable as the words came out. Her hands covered her eyes. She shook her head as if she could shake all of the singing and the home-wrecking Hungarians out of her head. Still, the human brain was not an etch-a-sketch. It just didn’t work that way.
“That Molokov guy is the meanest, I think.” She rubbed her eyes, still crying quietly in between phrases. “But Freddie and Florence and ANATOLY are mean, too! It’s no wonder Svetlana doesn’t like hugs! She probably thinks I’ll cheat on her!” Yes, it made perfect sense in Brittany’s head.
“I thought they were the perfect couple. Like Prince Charming and Snow White.” She let out a quiet, diminished sob. “It’s all wrong...” Brittany collapsed into a chair, shaking her head just a little. She was just beginning to quiet down, but she certainly didn’t look any happier.
