Slow day at the office had been slow despite the recent sniper shooting of Burt. Booth knew he should have been a little more sensitive toward the topic since he knew Burt a little, but in all honesty it was hard. He dealt with death on a daily basis. It really didn't bother him as much as it should have. That was when he knew he should take a step back and take a break. Ziva was on vacation, his part in the Burt investigation couldn't happen until an unofficial autopsy was complete, there was nothing more he could do at this point in time. So with his cell phone he texted Sam, got up and drove to pick up the younger man for pie.
Pie had always been a source of comfort for Booth. It was American, he was American, he fought for American freedom. Everything about it was good and made him feel better on the inside. Made him feel like there was hope for something better. It was probably a silly feeling just to hold on a pastry, but he couldn't help it. He was the kind of guy who wore his heart on his sleeve despite how many times he'd been handed the short straw in life. Looking over at Sam he smirked some. "If you don't love this pie, there is something wrong with you. This place has some of the best pie in town." He was determined to make Sam admit at least the pie was amazing even if he didn't end up feeling poetic and gushy about it like Booth did.
It'd been a while since they'd really just done anything simple. The last activity he remembered them doing involved countless lives lost. That part bothered him. It was war, he knew it was but still it felt like a part of his soul was damaged from it. That part worried him. He knew either way he wasn't going to Heaven anymore thanks to his own stupidity, but he couldn't help but wonder if what he did on the surface would have any effect on what happened in the pit. Shaking off that unwelcome internalization he grinned and stopped the car, guiding Sam into his own personal nirvana. "If I could, I would eat pie for breakfast, lunch, and dinner." He stated with a grin and stepped up to the counter to order a piece of apple crumb pie and a coffee. "Whatever he wants too." He added to the waitress thumbing at the man beside him. "It's on me."
