WHO: Sam Winchester & Chloe Sullivan. WHAT: Coffee and explanations. WHEN: Late afternoon. WHERE: Yay, Starbucks! RATING: PG.
Sam wasn't stationed here like the others were, but that didn't mean that he wasn't allowed to be as helpful as he could be when he was around. Coming back to Lawrence was both a gift and a curse all at once - on one hand, he had to come back to this mess. People, good and bad alike, staggering into the very same city in which his mother had been slaughtered on the ceiling of his nursery when he had been a mere baby. The same night Azazel had dripped that demon blood down his throat; the same night that his family had turned into a the huge wreck that it had been all his life. It was the starting point of a nightmare and all the people that were trapped here had absolutely no idea as to what they had been thrown into. Sam worried that one day the demons would find a way to get a decent jump on them. And while Buffy and Andrew seemed to be more than capable, the demons were still clever. Sneaky. Strong. The strongest of hunters had been killed by demons that they'd either underestimated or hadn't expected and Sam would never be able to forgive himself if the same thing happened here. It was why he and Dean had agreed to make it routine to come back and check up on things every now and again. It was a pain in the ass driving all over the country, but since they had to eventually go one way or another, it wasn't too much of an inconvenience coming here. They were always on the road anyway.
That was pretty much how this agreement to take Chloe along with him had started. Sam was getting ready to head out to follow up on some potential demon sightings within the city when Chloe spoke up about needing coffee. He was going to just drop her off and head out on his merry way, but after the way she spoke about demons not being a big deal, Sam easily took both offense and concern. He needed to explain that this wasn't a game and doing so over the message boards wouldn't be enough. Sam would make sure that he got his point through to the woman, even if he had to ask Ruby to put on a show of Big Bad Demon in order to get the job done properly. The life he knew wasn't a game and what Chloe was going to have to face one day - it was inevitable, with the way Lilith kept egging her demons straight on into the city - wasn't either. She needed to learn. And it was his job to make sure that she did.
Glancing over at her from the drivers seat of the Impala, Sam reached over to the radio and switched it off, the loud chorus bellowing out from the speakers suddenly vanishing into thin air. Dean had been blaring Foreigner earlier and Sam's ears couldn't handle the droning any longer. He was driving. Dean's driver picks the music theory now seemed to be working more than in his favor.
"I know this isn't easy and I can't say that it's gonna get any better, but if you listen to everyone and keep your head down you should be able to get along all right," Sam told her, turning the wheel, "it's a tough thing, being here, but since you don't have a choice...well, you kind of have to adjust."
