Freddie may have thought Florence knew what was about to happen, but she was, actually, a little confused. The whole computer conversation had been a little ridiculous, really. The way it had been worded had all been fuzzy and now she didn't know what was going on. Oh, she had an idea, sure. But in actuality? And why hadn't he just told her to come over? Why were they meeting downstairs? Surprise date night? It wasn't totally an un-Freddie thing to do. Just different.
She heard the guitar playing the second the elevator doors opened. And a few steps into the main lobby and she simply stopped and stared. It wasn't the lobby. Not the one she'd walked through nearly every day since arriving in Lawrence. It looked stunning. And a handful of people were milling around, some she knew, some who were strangers to her, looking either completely lost or excited or...something. She couldn't put her finger on it and she didn't get the chance to, because that's when she saw him.
For once, Freddie didn't look completely self-confident and full of arrogance. He looked more like the boy she imagined he might have been growing up, eager and anxious all at once. "What's all this?" she asked, eyeing him. Because it had to have been him. And if it hadn't been, well, he'd at least know what was going on. Right?
