WHO Spider-Man and OPEN.
WHAT: This isn't New York!
WHEN Early evening.
WHERE: Streets of Lawrence.
RATING: PG-13.

Peter was sort of confused. Five minutes ago, he had been sweeping his way through Queens, looking for the criminals tucked away in white van that he had detected on the police scanner he kept around for the extra help with the crime fighting. The next, just as he was wheeling his way around a particularly tall building, he being hurled across a field of grass and into a large set of trashcans. They bowled over upon impact, the metal twisting and bending in from the blow of his body smacking into them. They weren't very strong cans, and as he was picking himself up from the ground, Peter really couldn't help but feel as though the only reason he was even acknowledging that bit of information was because he was in shock. What had happened? Had he blacked out?

Brushing a stray banana peel from his shoulder, he began to climb his way back up to the top of the building he had found himself next to, using the view that he was given as a result to his advantage as he surveyed his surroundings. This definitely wasn't Queens. So where was he, exactly? And why was he here? Had he been sucked into some sort of blackhole? To think that he himself somehow did something that force himself in this situation was next to impossible. Peter had't done anything out of the normal lately.

Except fight crime, dressed in a spider costume. But that was beside the point.

The point, in fact, was that this wasn't New York. It couldn't have been. As often as he swung around the city, he knew his way around by now. As he did as much here, moving from building to building, exploring the new area, Peter's thoughts were verified. He was somewhere else entirely. Dropping into an abandoned alley, he decided that he needed to get more information on the situation - preferably as soon as possible. He planned on starting on figuring out his location. From there, he'd work on the rest.

...he was going to need some clothes.

It had taken a little while, but Needy had finally come to accept the fact that she was stuck in this world, at least for the time being. So, she had spent the afternoon out in search of a job. It had taken a while, but she finally found one, even though she had to convince the owner of the bar that she was fully capable of being a bouncer. She could handle rowdy guys, and she had proven herself by beating her new boss three times in a row at arm wrestling, then easily flipping him over her shoulder when he tried to show her an example of something drunk guys might try on her.

Plus, she may be eighteen, but you could work in bars at that age, even if you couldn't drink the alcohol.

She had been on her way home, glad that she would be working soon and able to afford things like food and clothes when she could have sworn she saw someone swing into an alley. Brow perked, the somewhat cynical blond walked over and peeked into the shadows, and couldn't help chuckling a little bit.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me."

The voice caught Peter off guard. He had been hoping that lurking around in the dark as he tried to gather himself would have been enough ground to give himself his bearings until he figured out what could have been done. But then the sound of someone speaking broke Peter's train of thought away from the serious brainstorming that he had taken on. Fortunately, he was still wearing his mask. He looked at the woman who had commented on his presence and scratched at the back of his head.

"Ahhh. Nothing to see here." He saluted her and turned, quickly feeling as though he needed to find a far more private and closed off location to really get some privacy. Unless...

"Actually, wait a second. Could you tell me...where I am?" Because that was probably something he could pick up from a random passerby on the street. Hopefully.

"Hey, a dude in spandex lurking in the shadows is something to see to me," Needy said, chuckling once more as she shrugged. And it was, really. She was probably the closest thing there was to a superhero in her own world, and instead of being applauded, she ended up in an asylum for the criminally insane.

"This is Lawrence, Kansas. A lot of people have just randomly ended up here, myself included." And then she smirked a little, knowing that her next statement might throw him off a bit. "Welcome to an alternate universe, Peter Parker."

Yeah, she had to use his name. She figured it would just be a matter of time before he found out that most of the people around there were going to know his real name already anyway, so why not give him a little heads up.

"Kansas?" What was he doing in Kansas? He was supposed to be on the other side of the country! What was going on here? Was there really some sort of black hole involved? Had he been drugged? Oh, boy, he had been drugged somehow, hadn't he? "No, this can't be Kansas. I didn't -"

He was going to argue the absurdity of the situation, but Peter couldn't find the motivation after the woman had spoken his name. Not Spider-Man, but his actual name. He found himself suddenly trapped into a stunned silence, mouth parting slightly in surprise underneath the mask that he wore. He was grateful for the mask. At least he was able to hide his confusion under there.

"Who?"

The alternate universe information was absorbed, but Peter was mostly focused on the fact that this stranger had just, despite his costume, called him by his actual name.

"Yep. Kansas. Before I showed up here I was in Buffalo, then BAM! Alternate universe, like I said."

Grinning, Needy watched him carefully, even though she couldn't see his face under that thing. This had to be the most entertaining thing to happen to her since she'd shown up there. "Peter. Parker. You know, your name? If you're the so called real Spider-Man, that is. Just to warn you, a hell of a lot of people are going to know who you are around here, Mr. Bitten By A Radioactive Spider. That was stupid of you, by the way. Anyway, a lot of people that we think are fictional get sucked into this universe. You're one of them. You're a comic book superstar. Like Superman and Batman."

No, this couldn't be right. Was he dreaming? Peter considered pinching himself, but the feel of the ground beneath his feet as he took several tentative steps forward had been real enough for him to reach the conclusion that he was indeed awake without resorting to making himself look like a moron in the process.

It was stupid of him to get bitten by a spider? She did realize that Peter hadn't exactly reached out and demanded that the spider do so, didn't she? Once over that initial feeling of annoyance, Peter got back to the shock that he had been suffering from before. She knew who he was. The spider bite, his actual name, Spider-Man. All connected. It couldn't have been a lucky guess. Peter Parker had never seen this woman before in his entire life, after all.

"I'm not in comic books," Peter pointed out immediately. "I mean - not outside of the ones that they're trying to contract me for, but since they can't get my permission to..." Wait, why was he explaining this to her? "I'm not fictional. And I don't know who Superman and Batman are." Peter turned his back, looking up to the sky in a manner that almost suggested that he was demanding that whatever had sucked him into this odd place reverse the process immediately. The mask hid his glare, unfortunately.

If one thing was for sure, it was the fact that Needy did not envy the so called fictional people here in Lawrence. She was perfectly find knowing that no one else knew what she did (even though she didn't regret it) or what she'd been through in general. If people knew about her like she knew about Spider-Man here, then she might be in a touch of trouble.

"Yeah, you are," she replied with a shrug. "In a lot of worlds you're thought to be a made up character. They didn't exactly have to have your permission if they thought you were made up. But you're the star of a lot of comics, and you show up in random other ones. Plus, there's the cartoons and movies."

"But it kinda figures that you haven't heard of Superman or Batman. They're under the DC brand, you're Marvel. That makes you rivals. You ever hear of like... Harry Potter though?"

"Cartoons and movies?" This was getting insane. It was one thing to get zapped from New York to the middle of Kansas, but to find out that he was in an alternate universe that considered Spider-Man and Peter Parker as fictional characters and also held knowledge that they were indeed one and the same...how did one react to something like that that wasn't pure denial, anger, or skepticism? "So you're telling me that if I swing around here like I do at home people are going to find that...unusual?" It'd be like starting all over in New York again. Except this time people would probably think he was some kind of crazy fan. Wait, was he actually buying this? Peter would have to see more for himself before he even truly considered the possibility.

"Harry Potter is a kids series about wizards and witches," Peter pointed out, at least having that much knowledge. He had read a little bit of the books when he was younger. He couldn't remember having ever finished. "What about it?"

"Yeah, cartoons and movies. And I have to say, the third movie kinda sucked. Next time you guys should try less singing. Or, MJ should, at least. We don't need Spider-Man The Musical, even though that's being made for Broadway, too. But yeah, people'll probably find it weird if you swing around where they can see you a lot," Needy said, grinning once more before continuing onto the the point she was trying to make.

"See, the thing is that the first person I met when I showed up here was Ron Weasley. Like, actual Ron Weasley, not just the actor or some crazed fanboy that claimed to be him. There's some others from Harry Potter here, too, plus people from other forms of entertainment." Needy was just glad that there didn't seem to be anything about her there.

"MJ..." Peter winced slightly under his mask. She had a beautiful voice, but the reminder of how nuts he had gotten in one of the bars she had been working in was unpleasant. He really, really hated that symbiote. "Thanks for the...uh, opinion, I guess." She did know more than anyone possibly could have about him. Maybe it was pointless acting like he believed that she was lying about all of this after all. Did that mean that everyone would know who Spider-Man was now that he was here? How could he do his job if he wasn't disguised? Unless he changed his name. But would people believe who he was if he told them in the first place? This was all so confusing.

"Okay, so, if the fictional character thing is true...how do we survive here? Where's all of our money? Our friends and family?" What was he supposed to do in order to get back home to where he belonged?

And really? Harry Potter?

"You get a job," Needy said simply. "I mean, you can use the fact that Peter Parker is a pretty normal sounding name to your advantage if anyone asks. Or tell them your parents were fans. But it's a city, places are hiring. I just got a job at a bar down the street today. But, to make life here just a little easier, there's a free apartment building for the people that are from other worlds. It's not that bad there."

The friends and family part made her frown though. That was easier for people like her, the ones that didn't have anyone anymore, but most people actually had people to miss. "It's up to you to decide if you want to hope your friends show up here, where the Apocalypse is on it's way."

"Where is that?" Peter looked over at her, frowning. An apartment building? That was free? Why wasn't there one of those back in New York for those vigilantes who had a hard time balancing work, school, and heroics? Maybe he had been looking in all the wrong places. Or maybe the situation was far more severe than he originally had thought. "Would they mind if I went there? And do you, uh..." Peter gestured to his costume. "Know where I might be able to find any clothes?" He didn't want to walk around the streets in broad daylight dressed up as Spider-Man. He didn't do that often in New York and he wasn't about to do it here, fictional or not.

"I don't want them anywhere near an Apocalypse," Peter said, wincing at the thought. Aunt May would have had a fit over the concept of the end of the world. The idea of her even trying to survive in a place that was potentially getting ready to explode or burst into flames was not one that he took on merrily.

"Well," Needy started, watching him again. "It is for the out of towners like us. And there's spare clothes in one of the downstairs closets, because not everyone shows up looking clean and sparkly. I even had to get a set out of there to start with, because mine had blood on them and I didn't really want to walk around like that for ages. But as for between here and the apartments, I can't think of anywhere unless you've either got some money hidden in that spandex or you're willing to do a little shoplifting. And you never seemed like the shoplifting type."

At the next part, Needy nodded at him. "Yep, I get that. Just focus on the wanting them not here for this instead of missing them or whatever."
