For a moment, Kimberly just looked at him. She'd never met someone who sold themselves short as much as Connor just had in that response. He was inferring that the other people on his team were heroic but he was not, for whatever reason. And then, on top of it, he was giving the team in general kudos, but giving himself, individually, nothing of the sort. That confused Kimberly. She was used to people like Shaina, Dano, and Frankie — loud, arrogant, and self-confident — and she couldn't remember the last time she heard someone gently cut themselves down like that. Though, she didn't entirely feel like it was her place to be correcting him, especially because he hadn't mentioned specifically what it was that he did, and she might just end up making things worse by trying to go blind.
So Kimberly said nothing. She just nodded her understanding of what he was trying to say and decided not to push the subject and make him uncomfortable again. Especially when he bought her backpedalling attempt hook, line, and sinker. See? I have it under control, she thought to herself, ignoring that the Shaina voice was responding in a less than positive way. "I do," Kimberly replied with a shrug. And she did. There were stranger things, after all, than chasing dinosaurs for a living. There were things like being eaten by a piece of heavy machinery and waking up in a whole new place completely in tact and uninjured. The dinosaur thing was really not that far-fetched to Kimberly, all things considered. "Still. I'm just saying, you know...whatever you say stays between us. I'm nice like that," she attempted to recover the awkward conversation and then pushed forward into a new one.
"That looks awesome," she said, nodding to their dinner. "You rock so hard for cooking for me, you don't even know," she added, genuinely impressed, flattered, and contented by the whole situation. It was cool to hang out with a guy you liked; it was cooler when he offered to make you dinner and then actually followed through by not picking up a phone and calling for pizza.
