Okay, so other than being separated from her Flock, missing that idiot boy who'd broken her heart, worrying about that whole end of the world thing, and apparently being looked down on for being just a kid? The place wasn't too bad. Max didn't hate it, if it counted for anything. She missed home, desperately, and though she'd been told things stayed the same there, she still worried about the other kids. But it could have been worse. She could have been living in a dog crate instead of her own apartment. She could have been eating genetically altered foods rather than hot pockets and cheetos and cookies.
What Max did miss, though, was an actual landscape. Kansas was all plains. Flat land as far as she could see. She missed the mountains of Colorado like crazy. Or even the beaches of Florida or California. Flat land wasn't really conducive to her, though. She needed to stretch her wings - literally - and it was easier to be found when there wasn't much to hide behind. While she and the Flock were "out" back in her world, she didn't think these people would be quite so accepting, especially since she was the only one of her kind around. Everyone else was more than happy to spill their secrets, but she wasn't ready for that.
Max had studied the building carefully and knew she could get to the roof easily enough. She slipped up there late in the evening, well after the sun had gone down. Maybe she could get away with it. If she did get caught, well, so what? She'd take off running...well, flying. It wouldn't be the first time. She hadn't expected a garden to be on the roof, but it was kind of nice, at least.
As soon as she figured out she was alone, Max slipped her windbreaker off and gave her wings a much needed stretch. They were pretty impressive, she had to admit, and she was proud of them, even if some people did think they made her a freak. It just made existing a little bit harder was all.
She took in the landscape around her. Flat, save a few taller buildings. She couldn't really use those for coverage, not when people could peer out at any time. She'd just have to get high enough that people wouldn't see her. That was all. It would work. It had to. Because she couldn't stay ground-bound like this anymore. She'd go mad if she did.
